Mikhail Pichugin, a Russian whale watcher, survived 67 days drifting at sea in an inflatable boat after his brother and nephew died weeks before he was rescued. Recovering in a hospital in Magadan, he recounted the harrowing details of the ordeal. Pichugin had strapped the corpses of his brother, Sergey, and nephew, Ilya, to the disabled catamaran to prevent them from going overboard. Ilya died of starvation after hardly eating anything, leading to Sergey’s distressing reaction.

After witnessing his son’s demise, Sergey reportedly became distraught, crying, screaming, and even jumping into the water. Despite his efforts to save his brother, Sergey died ten days later. The trio had been returning from a trip to the Shantar Islands when their vessel’s engines malfunctioned. They drifted for weeks before the boat was found off the Kamchatka peninsula, miles away from their intended destination. Russian officials had searched for them for a month before calling off the efforts.

Pichugin survived by relying on rainwater he collected and a thick camel wool sleeping bag for warmth. His weight loss of over 100 pounds during the ordeal helped him endure the drifting. His thoughts of his mother and daughter at home, as well as his belief that God was looking out for him, motivated him to stay alive. He credited the fishing trawler that rescued him, called the Angel ship, for his survival.

Now recovering in the hospital, Pichugin expressed a desire to return home to bury his brother and nephew. However, he may face legal consequences for violating Russian maritime safety laws by traveling beyond the permitted distance from shore. Despite this potential hurdle, his survival story has captivated many and serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of insurmountable odds. The details of his incredible survival at sea will likely continue to inspire others to persevere in the face of adversity.
