Tigray war survivors look to the future with a hope that time will heal the scars of war, two years later

Despite these challenges, there are signs of hope in the region. Humanitarian aid is starting to trickle in, allowing for the provision of basic necessities such as food and medicine to those in need. The United Nations has also launched an investigation into alleged human rights abuses committed during the conflict, which could potentially bring some accountability to those responsible. In addition, the Ethiopian government has committed to rebuilding infrastructure and restoring services in Tigray.

However, the road to recovery is a long and arduous one. The scars of war run deep, and many people are still grappling with the trauma of what they experienced. The psychological impact of the conflict cannot be underestimated, and it will take time for individuals and communities to heal. There are also concerns about the long-term effects of the conflict on the economy and livelihoods of the people in Tigray, many of whom are farmers and rely on agriculture for their survival.

One of the key challenges facing the region is the disarmament and demobilisation of former TPLF soldiers, who number over 200,000. This process is crucial for restoring stability and security in Tigray, but it is also fraught with difficulties. Many soldiers may be reluctant to give up their weapons, and there are concerns about the potential for violence if the process is not managed effectively. In addition, there are fears of a resurgence of the TPLF as a political force, as the party seeks official reinstatement by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia.

Internal divisions within the TPLF leadership further complicate the situation. The power struggles between different factions within the party have spilled over into the governance of Tigray, leading to tensions and instability. The recent expulsion of former deputy Getachew Reda and other members of the leadership has highlighted the deep-seated rifts within the party, threatening to derail the fragile peace that has been achieved so far. These internal conflicts are a major obstacle to the rebuilding and reconstruction efforts in Tigray, as they create further instability and uncertainty.

Despite these challenges, the people of Tigray are resilient and determined to rebuild their lives and communities. They have shown incredible strength and courage in the face of adversity, and there is a sense of hope and optimism that things will eventually improve. The international community has a crucial role to play in supporting the reconstruction efforts in Tigray, by providing humanitarian aid, funding for reconstruction projects, and diplomatic pressure to ensure accountability for human rights abuses. With the right support and commitment, Tigray can overcome the challenges it faces and emerge stronger than ever before.
