South Carolina’s Ashlyn Watkins back in action after charges dropped and suspension lifted

Ashlyn Watkins, a South Carolina basketball star, had criminal charges of assault and battery and kidnapping dropped on Nov. 1. Watkins was arrested in August, which led to her suspension from the team. Despite the suspension, Watkins continued attending classes. The University of South Carolina confirmed in a statement that Watkins has returned to team activities, including practice. She had not been working out with the team and did not travel with them to Washington, D.C., for a White House visit to celebrate their national championship win last season. Watkins also missed the team’s season opener against Michigan, which they won 68-62 in Las Vegas.

Watkins, who led the Southeastern Conference in blocks last season and has the only two dunks in the program’s history, is expected to step into a key role for the team this season after the departure of Kamilla Cardoso, who was the team’s top scorer and rebounder last season before being drafted into the WNBA. South Carolina is set to play against N.C. State in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday. This news comes as the college basketball season kicks off, with the University of South Carolina team making preparations for their upcoming games. The team will depend on Watkins to contribute in the post and help secure victories as they aim to build on their success from previous seasons.

The legal charges against Watkins being dropped have allowed her to rejoin her team in time for the upcoming games. This development is a positive one for Watkins and the University of South Carolina team, as they welcome back an important player who has shown great talent and potential on the court. The team’s success in previous seasons has raised expectations for the new season, and Watkins’ return will be crucial in helping the team achieve their goals. As Watkins resumes practices with the team, she will have the opportunity to showcase her skills and contribute to their performance in the games ahead.

Watkins’ absence from team activities, including practices and games, was a setback for both her and the team. However, with the charges against her now dropped, Watkins can focus on basketball and helping her team succeed in the upcoming season. The team’s victory against Michigan in their season opener without Watkins highlights their resilience and depth, but her return will undoubtedly enhance their chances of achieving even greater success. Watkins’ unique abilities, such as leading the SEC in blocks and being the only player in program history with dunks, make her a valuable asset to the team as they look to build on their achievements from previous seasons.

As South Carolina prepares for their upcoming game against N.C. State, Watkins’ return will bring a sense of stability and strength to the team. Her experience and skills on the court will be crucial in helping the team navigate the challenges of the tough competition ahead. With Watkins back in action, the team can look forward to a strong season and strive to reach new heights in their pursuit of success. The University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball program will benefit from Watkins’ presence and contributions, setting the stage for an exciting and promising season for both the team and their fans.
