Could St. Denis Medical’s Matt and Serena be the New Sitcom Couple Fans Will Cheer for? – An Exclusive Look

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Mekki Leeper and Kahyun Kim, who play Matt and Serena on the sitcom St. Denis Medical, express their support for the idea that their characters could be the next beloved fictional couple. They acknowledge the will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic that is a central theme in the early seasons of the show, leaving fans wondering about the potential for romance between the two characters. Creator Eric Ledgin hints at a slow burn relationship between Matt and Serena, indicating that there may be at least a one-sided romantic interest that will be explored over time.

Ledgin, who has previously worked on popular shows like Superstore, wanted to avoid following the same path with developing relationships between central characters in St. Denis Medical. He wanted to create a different dynamic by exploring the possibility of a romantic connection between Matt and Serena in a more gradual and unpredictable way. The show itself focuses on overworked medical staff at an underfunded Oregon hospital, giving viewers a glimpse into the challenges and humor of their daily lives. Ledgin highlights the fun of not making the potential romance the central focus of the show, allowing it to unfold organically over time.

St. Denis Medical is a mockumentary-style sitcom that features a talented cast including Wendi McLendon-Covey, David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, and more. Leeper and Kim, who play Matt and Serena, enjoy the unique format of the show that allows them to break the fourth wall and connect with the audience through their characters. Leeper especially appreciates the opportunity to work on a show reminiscent of fan-favorites like The Office and Parks and Recreation, expressing his excitement to be part of a new wave of similar comedy series led by shows like Abbott Elementary. The challenges of filming in a mockumentary style, such as remembering to look at the camera, are minor compared to the enjoyment of exploring this new space as actors.

For Kim, the experience of filming a mockumentary opens up a new dimension of storytelling for the actors. She appreciates the freedom to look directly at the camera and convey emotions and reactions in a way that breaks traditional norms in television. Leeper also emphasizes the fun and satisfaction that come with being able to deliver a joke or engage with the audience through the camera lens, creating a more interactive and dynamic viewing experience. St. Denis Medical airs on NBC on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET, with episodes available for streaming on Peacock the following day, allowing fans to follow the evolving relationship between Matt and Serena and enjoy the comedic antics of the hospital staff as they navigate their challenging and often hilarious workplace.
