Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs have accused federal investigators of wrongfully taking privileged materials from his Brooklyn jail cell, including notes on legal pads and an address book. However, legal expert Neama Rahmani has stated that any materials taken by federal investigators would have been vetted by a third-party team to ensure no privileged information was included. Rahmani also mentioned that inmates have reduced privacy expectations while in prison. Combs was arrested in September on federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges. His defense team is asserting attorney-client privilege on some of the confiscated material.
Combs’ legal team has requested a hearing on the matter and also requested that he be allowed to appear in court without shackles. The prosecutors accuse Combs of trying to pressure witnesses from behind bars, which could impact his bail hearing. They argue that he must remain remanded due to potential obstruction of justice. Combs is set to appear in court for a bail hearing on Friday, as he continues to try to secure his release before the trial. Prosecutors raised concerns about the safety of witnesses and accusers if Combs were to be released on bail, with some alleging that he may be using intermediaries to contact witnesses.
The judge overseeing Combs’ case previously rejected his request for a gag order that would restrict additional accusers from coming forward. This decision was based on the limitations of the legal rule not allowing for such restrictions. Combs has been held without bail since his arrest in Brooklyn federal jail. The trial is scheduled for May 5 of next year, with the possibility of a new U.S. attorney taking over the case. The investigation into Combs began in November 2023 after former girlfriend Casandra Ventura sued him for physical and sexual abuse, which was settled out of court.
A leaked video showed Combs assaulting Ventura in a hotel in 2016, confirming some of her claims in the lawsuit. She alleged that he punched her in the face, resulting in a black eye, and threw her to the ground in a drunken state. Combs denies all allegations from Ventura and other accusers. He faces accusations of distributing date rape drugs and victimizing both adults and children at parties, with some allegations involving unnamed celebrity accomplices. Texas attorney Tony Buzbee represents over 100 people looking to sue Combs for these allegations.
