Two Russian tourists, Ilia Peregudin and Maksim Melekhov, were reportedly killed by sharks in the Philippines after being swept away by an undercurrent at a popular diving location off Verde Island. The incident occurred when the divers were carried towards a group of hungry sharks that were resurfacing due to the strong current. While two of the divers managed to return to their boat with the master diver, the other two failed to resurface. Philippine Coast Guard Captain Airland Lapitan mentioned that they had a difficult time recovering one of the divers as there were sharks circling around the body, and it was believed that the individual was attacked by sharks as their right hand was missing.

Footage taken from the dive showed schools of fish in the area in the moments before the attack. Peregudin was found unconscious at sea and was pronounced dead on arrival after being transported to a hospital in Batangas. Witness Diego Reyes, who had dived with the Russian tourists, described the experience as overwhelming and traumatizing, mentioning the strong currents and waves at the surface that made it challenging to get back with the group once they got separated. He expressed hope that authorities would be able to figure out what really happened to the divers and extended his condolences to the deceased tourists.

The incident has sparked an investigation into the shark attack, with authorities working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragic deaths of the two tourists. The area off Verde Island is known for its vibrant marine life and corals, making it a popular diving destination. However, the strong currents and presence of hungry sharks can pose a danger to divers, highlighting the risks associated with underwater activities. The loss of Peregudin and Melekhov serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions and awareness when engaging in water sports and diving activities to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The tragic event has left the diving and local community mourning the loss of the Russian tourists, with many expressing their condolences and sharing their experiences with the group. The challenging conditions faced by the divers, including strong currents and waves, underscore the unpredictable nature of underwater environments and the need for proper training and preparation before embarking on diving expeditions. The recovery efforts and investigation into the attack are ongoing, with authorities working to gather more information and determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal shark attack.

As details of the incident continue to emerge, the diving community and authorities are focusing on improving safety measures and raising awareness about the risks associated with diving in areas with strong currents and marine life. The loss of Peregudin and Melekhov has served as a somber reminder of the dangers that can be present in the underwater world, highlighting the need for vigilance and caution when engaging in water activities. The investigation into the shark attack aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths and provide insights into how similar incidents can be prevented in the future, emphasizing the importance of understanding and respecting the marine environment to ensure the safety of divers and tourists.
