The main factor influencing British holidaymakers when choosing where to go on holiday is deals and prices in travel adverts, according to a new report by advertising platform Teads. The report found that 80 per cent of respondents cited deals and prices as their main inspiration. Cost was also found to be the primary factor for accommodation and flight choices, with 60 per cent and 54 per cent of respondents respectively highlighting it as important. With money playing a significant role in holiday booking decisions, the report also identified the best value destinations across Europe where budgets can go the furthest.
The UK Post Office’s annual money report for 2024 revealed that prices for meals, drinks, and other tourist items have decreased in over 60 per cent of the resorts and cities surveyed compared to the previous year. Portugal’s Algarve was ranked as the best destination in Europe for budget travellers, holding onto fifth place with a 1.2 per cent drop in prices. This ranking saw it surpass Turkey and Bulgaria, where price increases caused Marmaris and Sunny Beach to fall in the rankings. The Algarve was noted for having the cheapest coffee and wine among the surveyed destinations, although items like suncream and insect repellent were more expensive compared to other places in the top five.
Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach was placed seventh in the rankings of best value destinations in Europe. Prices for beer, soft drinks, and water were relatively low, and a three-course evening meal for two with a bottle of house wine was the fourth cheapest in the top 10. However, the cost of suncream in Sunny Beach was noted to be the second most expensive among the top 10 destinations. Marmaris in Turkey took the ninth spot on the list, with local prices in restaurants and bars rising due to inflation and the devaluation of the Turkish lira. While a three-course evening meal for two with wine was the second most expensive in the top 10, supermarket purchases of items like suncream, insect repellent, and water were affordable.
Overall, the Teads Travel Compass report highlights the importance of deals and prices in travel adverts for British holidaymakers when choosing where to go on holiday. With cost being a significant factor in holiday booking decisions, the report identified the best value destinations in Europe where budgets can stretch the furthest. Portugal’s Algarve emerged as the top destination for budget travellers, with prices for meals, drinks, and tourist items falling compared to the previous year. While destinations like Sunny Beach in Bulgaria and Marmaris in Turkey offer affordable options for certain items, some costs like suncream may be higher compared to other destinations. Ultimately, understanding the cost and value of travel destinations can help travellers make informed decisions when booking their next holiday.
