The El Paso sector of the southwest border has seen a significant increase in encounters, making it the busiest sector in the country. In February, it recorded 2,110 encounters, while overall encounters at the southwest border saw a 94.1% drop from the previous year. Despite becoming the busiest sector, El Paso still experienced a significant decrease in encounters compared to the previous year, with just over 2,000 encounters recorded. This represents a substantial drop from the 23,919 encounters recorded in February of the previous year. The drop in numbers is indicative of the success of policies aimed at reducing illegal border crossings.

San Diego, which was previously the busiest sector on the southwest border, saw a decline in encounters as well, with just 1,650 encounters recorded in February. This marked a 94.8% decrease from the previous year. The success of these policies in reducing illegal border crossings is attributed to the implementation of measures such as placing troops on the border, which has proven to be a game changer. This approach has been described as a “force multiplier” by sector chiefs, further emphasizing the impact of increased enforcement efforts.

Overall, border sectors such as El Centro in California and Big Ben in West Texas saw a significant reduction in encounters in February. The El Centro sector recorded just 102 encounters, a 91.6% decrease from the previous year. Similarly, the Big Ben sector saw a 71% drop in encounters compared to the same month last year, with only 165 encounters recorded. These sectors, along with others along the border, have seen a notable decline in illegal crossings, indicating the effectiveness of border security measures.

The significant drop in encounters at the southwest border is reflective of the success of policies implemented by the Trump administration to address illegal border crossings. The use of “maximum consequences” for border jumpers has empowered border agents to enforce security measures more effectively. The decrease in encounters at the El Paso sector in particular demonstrates the impact of these policies on reducing illegal immigration. The administration’s approach to border security has led to a substantial decline in crossings at various sectors along the southwest border.

The data from CBP highlights the success of border enforcement efforts in reducing illegal border crossings. With a 94.1% drop in encounters at the southwest border compared to the previous year, it is evident that policies aimed at strengthening border security have been effective. The deployment of troops, along with other measures, has proven to be a significant factor in reducing illegal crossings. The recent shift in the busiest sector from San Diego to El Paso further underscores the impact of these policies on deterring illegal immigration.

Moving forward, continued enforcement efforts and policies aimed at strengthening border security will be essential in maintaining the downward trend in encounters at the southwest border. As the administration continues to prioritize border security, it is likely that further measures will be implemented to address illegal immigration. The success seen in sectors like El Paso and San Diego serves as a testament to the effectiveness of these policies in reducing illegal crossings and enhancing national security.
