House Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Deila Ramirez and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, reacted strongly to the detention of anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil amid concerns that he may be deported. They spoke out against the Trump administration’s actions and expressed outrage that someone could be targeted for dissenting opinions. Other lawmakers, such as Rep. Ami Bera and Rep. Lois Frankel, emphasized the importance of due process for individuals like Khalil, regardless of their beliefs. Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder married to a U.S. citizen, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials on March 8. The U.S. government argued in court that Khalil fraudulently applied to change his immigration status without disclosing membership in certain organizations, which could be grounds for deportation. The Justice Department claimed that Khalil’s allegedly false statements on his application provided a legal basis for deportation, despite his free speech rights. President Donald Trump applauded ICE for detaining Khalil, attributing it to his administration’s crackdown on individuals engaging in activities deemed anti-American or pro-terrorist.
In response to Khalil’s detention, Columbia University faculty and students have held protests and vigils to show their disagreement with the administration’s actions. The university has faced backlash, with alleged members of the campus community either being deported or facing legal action. Trump’s White House withdrew $400 million in federal funding for Columbia University due to its protests, prompting efforts by the university to regain the funding. Another alleged protester, Ranjani Srinivasan, voluntarily returned to India after having her student visa revoked, showing the consequences facing individuals who engage in activities viewed as anti-American or pro-terrorist.
House Democrats continue to advocate for Khalil and others like him, stressing the importance of upholding legal rights and due process for all individuals, regardless of their beliefs. They have criticized the Trump administration’s handling of Khalil’s case, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in immigration proceedings.
