Coping with uncertainty as it continues to grow

Uncertainty in the face of the rapid changes under the current presidential administration has led to a collective unease among people, which can have detrimental effects on societal well-being. Research has shown that uncertainty challenges people’s ability to think clearly, sift through information, and make sound decisions, making them susceptible to cognitive traps. Some individuals may get overwhelmed by the various options available, while others may latch onto simplistic explanations for complex problems.

Psychologist Nick Carleton suggests that some individuals may rationalize suboptimal decisions due to their dislike of uncertainty, such as quitting a job because of the fear of losing it. Accepting that some uncertainty in life is inevitable and even desirable is the first step towards avoiding the pitfalls of uncertainty, according to social psychologist Jessica Alquist. She highlights that uncertainty can also bring a sense of adventure and novelty to life, making it necessary for individuals to recognize the positive aspects of uncertainty.

From an evolutionary perspective, humans have a natural tendency to predict what might happen next, which was helpful for our ancestors when faced with potential dangers. However, the modern-day worries, such as climate change and global crises, can significantly impact mental health, especially for individuals with a low tolerance for uncertainty. The widespread use of the Internet and mobile phones has been linked to a decline in people’s ability to handle uncertainty effectively.

The intense desire to resolve uncertainty quickly can lead individuals to ignore essential information and hinder their ability to dig deeper. An overreliance on search engines and instant information can inhibit critical thinking skills and lead to a quest for immediate certainty. Research has shown that certainty can influence individuals’ behavior, even causing some to ignore medical guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, uncertainty can also serve as a signal to focus and motivate individuals towards specific actions.

Studies have indicated that uncertainty can enhance savoring and appreciation for the present moment, prompting individuals to stop and enjoy the little things in life. Small acts of kindness and social connections have been shown to increase well-being and help individuals navigate uncertainty effectively. By focusing on controllable and positive aspects of life and engaging in small, manageable tasks, individuals can overcome paralysis during periods of uncertainty. Taking inspiration from a parable about throwing sea stars back into the water, it highlights the impact individuals can have by making a difference one step at a time, even in the face of uncertainty.
