Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, is a vibrant city characterized by its modern architecture, extreme climate, and its role as a cultural and political center in Central Asia. It’s not just a governmental hub; Astana markets itself as a business and cultural sanctuary, enhancing its image as a gastronomical hotspot. The city’s efforts to host international events have notably increased its visibility, with over 500 events in the last year alone, leading to a 13% rise in tourist numbers. High-profile celebrity appearances, such as Jennifer Lopez and Andy Serkis, contribute to this dynamic, signaling safety and prestige. According to Olga Abeldinova from the “Astana Tourism” department, such events attract tourists from neighboring nations, further enhancing the city’s status.

When visiting Astana, spending time at the iconic Baiterek Monument should be at the top of your itinerary. This 105-meter tower symbolizes the city, rooted in Kazakh mythology, representing the Tree of Life with a golden egg at its peak. The tower not only offers spectacular panoramic views but also houses a small ethnographic museum. A modest entry fee allows visitors to access both the viewing deck and the opportunity to touch the palm print of the first President of Kazakhstan. Nearby, Nurly Zhol Boulevard serves as a picturesque promenade, linking key sites like the Presidential Residence to the Khan Shatyr shopping mall, characterized by its tent-like architecture and vibrant surrounding areas.

Astana is uniquely split by the Ishim River, dividing it into older Soviet-style regions and the more modern, glitzy left bank. Residents favor the riverbank for leisure activities, particularly during warm summer months when picturesque bridges and parks attract families and visitors alike. Ferries are available for those seeking a unique view of the city’s landmarks from the water, providing both leisure and scenic vistas. This riverside ambiance adds to the allure of Astana, making it perfect for relaxation amid an urban backdrop.

The religious landscape of the city is highlighted by the impressive Astana Grand Mosque, inaugurated in 2022, which is the largest in Central Asia and can accommodate nearly 250,000 worshippers. Its imposing architecture mirrors the significance of Islam in the country. The Hazrat Sultan Mosque, while smaller, is equally captivating with its intricate design. Access to these sacred spaces is free, although modest attire is required, emphasizing the respect for local customs and the traditions of visiting places of worship.

For those eager to explore Kazakhstan’s rich history, the National Museum provides extensive insights into the nomadic cultures that have shaped the region. This museum, the largest in Central Asia, features various historical artifacts and modern art, including prestigious temporary exhibitions. Notably, past exhibits like one on Leonardo da Vinci captured widespread attention, drawing international guests. The affordable entrance fee enables visitors to experience a wealth of cultural knowledge and artistic expression within the nation’s capital.

Independence Square serves as a focal point for many attractions in Astana, encompassing the National Museum and Hazrat Sultan Mosque, among others. Notable structures like the Independence Palace and Shabyt Arts University contribute to the square’s architectural charm. Dominated by the Kazakh Eli Monument, which commemorates Kazakhstan’s independence, the square encapsulates the country’s journey and aspirations. Nearby, the Pyramid of Peace is an architectural landmark, originally created for intercultural dialogue, now serving for various communal events. Astana is in constant evolution, with new attractions emerging regularly, from parks to cultural institutions, ensuring that the city continuously captivates the curiosity of both residents and tourists alike.
