Dentist Previously on Probation Treated 9-Year-Old Girl Who Died After Anesthesia

A California dentist, Dr. Ryan Watkins, faced scrutiny after a 9-year-old girl, Silvanna Moreno, died shortly following a routine dental procedure. This tragic incident raises questions about Dr. Watkins’s competency, especially considering previous disciplinary actions he faced. In 2020, he was placed on probation for unprofessional conduct in a 2016 incident when a 54-year-old patient suffered a cardiac arrest during a dental surgery due to excessive administration of medication. The Dental Board of California noted that the patient was in excellent health but had underlying issues that Dr. Watkins failed to adequately document or investigate. The case resulted in a 35-month probation period for Watkins, along with financial penalties.

Watkins defended his actions during the previous incident, claiming that emergency protocols were enacted immediately following the cardiac event. He stated that all medications had been administered properly and that the patient had been under continuous monitoring. While the regulatory proceedings arose from the 2016 situation, Watkins emphasized that he had adhered to safety protocols and settled the issue without admitting fault. He maintained his commitment to patient safety and claimed to have implemented rigorous safety measures in light of past situations.

Following the recent death of Silvanna Moreno, Dr. Watkins expressed a similar sentiment, attributing the girl’s death to a pre-existing medical condition of which he was unaware. He highlighted the coroner’s ruling that identified her death as an accident caused by a rare condition known as methemoglobinemia, exacerbated by nitrous oxide administration during her procedure. This reaffirms the innocence Watkins feels regarding the treatments he provided and illustrates his commitment to following established medical protocols.

The tragic nature of Moreno’s death has not gone unnoticed, with both Watkins and his practice, Dreamtime Dentistry, expressing deep sorrow for the family. He has stated that an internal review is underway and that they are consulting with experts in dental anesthesia to enhance patient safety and prevent future incidents. Watkins has reiterated his position that the dosage administered during the procedure was appropriate for Moreno’s age and weight, distancing himself from allegations of malpractice.

The community remains apprehensive about the safety protocols in place, especially given Watkins’s past. By continuing to practice despite previous incidents, there are concerns about whether adequate changes have been made to ensure similar tragedies do not reoccur. This unfortunate situation reminds patients and their families of the inherent risks associated with anesthesia and dental procedures, particularly for children who may have undiagnosed medical issues.

Watkins’s ongoing commitment to patient safety is now under increased scrutiny, and the aftermath of Silvanna Moreno’s death will likely continue to influence public perception of his practice. As the dental community reassesses procedures and safety measures in light of such incidents, both families and practitioners need to navigate the delicate balance between necessary medical interventions and the risks involved in administering anesthesia. The hope is that this tragedy can lead to better practices that prioritize patient safety above all.
