Compose, Seal, and Pause: A Letter Café Opens in Paris

Throughout my life, I’ve immersed myself in letter writing, a practice that flourished particularly during my twenties. My correspondence embraced a spectrum of recipients—from elderly relatives who cherished pen and paper to distant pen pals adding an element of romance to the endeavor. Unlike fleeting digital communications, handwritten letters embody a tangible emotional connection, making them stand out in our fast-paced world. This devotion to physical correspondence speaks to an inherent spirit contained within each letter, as they not only convey messages but also carry the weight of memories, emotions, and experiences. As poet John Donne eloquently noted, letters weave souls together, creating a unique bond that transcends time and distance, reflecting trust and intention that are often missing in modern forms of communication.

Amid this revival of letter writing, Café Pli emerged in Paris as a sanctuary for those seeking to reconnect with this intimate art form. Established in July 2024 by Geneviève Landsmann, it is notably Europe’s first letter café, drawing inspiration from its South Korean counterpart, Nuldam Space. At Café Pli, guests engage in the tactile experience of choosing stationery, enveloped in a nostalgic aura reminiscent of a bygone era. They can write letters to themselves or others, with the added uniqueness of scheduling when those letters will be sent. This embrace of thoughtful waiting captures the essence of anticipation, where the café’s staff meticulously handles the logistics, ensuring that each letter reaches its intended recipient at a future date.

The pricing structure at Café Pli emphasizes the allure of delayed gratification, with options that let patrons secure their letters for various lengths of time—ranging from one year to twenty. While the fees might seem steep compared to standard postal rates, the value lies in the experience, camaraderie, and sentimentality associated with writing a letter. The café’s commitment to safeguarding messages, even in the event of its closure, reflects a deep respect for the written word, promising its customers that their heartfelt notes will be honored and dispatched as intended. This reinforces the idea that investing in personal expression through letter writing may transcend monetary costs, offering a richer return in emotional fulfillment.

On a recent visit to Café Pli, nestled in the vibrant 11th arrondissement of Paris, I was immersed in an inviting atmosphere filled with the sounds of creativity and community. The charming space buzzed with patrons engaging in the age-old craft of letter writing, reflected in countless enveloped notes adorned with all kinds of stickers. This café successfully transformed the act of writing into a social activity, cementing its role not only as a letter depot but as an artistic haven. It regularly hosts workshops that further enrich this creative space, allowing participants to explore diverse artistic pursuits, including calligraphy and watercolor painting, thereby fostering a culture of inspiration.

As I approached the task of writing to my future self, I was struck by the challenge of articulating thoughts that would resonate down the line. Drawing inspiration from Lewis Carroll, who famously noted the importance of satisfying curiosity in correspondence, I endeavored to craft a message that could provide both insight and warmth. My thoughts flowed onto the card, mingling wishes and aspirations for what lay ahead. Sealing the envelope with a touch of wax, I added it to the treasure trove of letters awaiting future dispatch, participating in the collective hopes and dreams of fellow patrons who also entrusted their words to the unique process offered by Café Pli.

Ultimately, my letter-writing adventure at Café Pli was more than just an act of communication; it was an invitation to embrace the power of reflection. This experience reaffirmed the significance of tangible letters in a digital world, reminding me of their ability to encapsulate moments of vulnerability and authenticity. Each letter carries its weight—transforming ordinary thoughts into lasting mementos poised to be rediscovered. In the end, the adventure of writing, sending, and eventually receiving a letter provides a rare opportunity to pause, reflect, and connect with both oneself and the world, a cherished practice worth preserving in an ever-evolving society.
