Poll: Zohran Mamdani’s Prospects Against Cuomo and Adams in NYC Race

In the race for New York City’s next mayor, Democratic primary winner and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is leading the pack, according to a recent poll. His victory in the primary signals a significant moment in the city’s political landscape, with national implications as New York remains a key liberal stronghold. Mamdani’s potential governance will tackle critical issues such as housing affordability, cost of living, and public safety, shaping broader national conversations ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The contest also represents a battleground for differing party ideologies, with Mamdani’s progressive stance challenged by more centrist figures like former Governor Andrew Cuomo and current Mayor Eric Adams.

Polling data from American Pulse, gathered between June 28 and July 1, 2025, reveals that Mamdani commands 35.2% support among likely voters in the city. Cuomo trails at 29%, while Adams trails further behind at 13.8%. The data shows demographic trends in electoral support, with Mamdani particularly popular among younger voters aged 18 to 44, who favor him by nearly 50%. Meanwhile, Cuomo finds his strongest backing in the Bronx, and Adams collects support from Independents and Republicans. Interestingly, when asked which candidate would do the best job, Cuomo received 33.5% of the responses, closely followed by Mamdani at 32.5%.

Mamdani’s campaign centers on issues of affordability and social equity, advocating for rent freezes, no-cost child care, free public transportation, and city-owned grocery stores. His vision contrasts sharply with that of mainstream Democrats, particularly in his proposal for a new Department of Community Safety, which would prioritize outreach services over enhanced police presence, diverging from Governor Kathy Hochul’s approach of collaborating with law enforcement agencies. While Mamdani’s platform has garnered support from high-profile progressives like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, he faces skepticism from centrist and moderate voters critical for any electoral success in November.

The dynamics of the race have drawn commentary from various political figures, including former President Donald Trump, who labeled Mamdani as a “100% Communist Lunatic” on social media, reflecting a broader strategy to delegitimize progressive candidates. Mamdani countered Trump’s criticisms by claiming that such attacks highlight the desperation of opponents who aim to distract from their own failed policies. This exchange indicates a larger narrative emerging around the mayoral race, framing Mamdani’s potential leadership within a broader ideological battle between progressives and conservatives.

As the election date approaches, with voters set to return to the polls on November 4, 2025, the stakes are particularly high. Not only will the outcome impact local governance on pressing issues like public safety and housing, but it will also play a significant role in shaping future political strategies and alignments. The engagement of both Adams and Cuomo, who are running as independents after their Democratic affiliations, adds another layer of complexity to the race, attracting national attention and interest.

Political analysts, including Nate Silver, have suggested that while Mamdani demonstrates strong primary support, he could be vulnerable in the general election, which typically sees a broader voter turnout. This raises questions about whether his progressive platform can gain the necessary support from centrist Democrats and independents, factors crucial for a successful campaign in the general election. The unfolding dynamics will not only define Mamdani’s ambitions but also the future trajectory of the Democratic Party in a city that has often set the tone for national liberal policies.
