Witnesses Claim Diogo Jota Was Not Speeding Prior to Fatal Accident

On July 3, 2025, the tragic car crash that claimed the lives of Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva has become a focal point of controversy and public mourning. Spanish police initially reported that Jota may have been speeding at the time of the incident. However, two Portuguese lorry drivers who witnessed the crash have stepped forward to challenge this police statement, asserting that they observed Jota’s Lamborghini travelling at a moderate speed shortly before the tragic event. Their testimonies raise questions about the accuracy of the police’s assessment and suggest that external factors may have contributed to the crash.

José Aleixo Duarte, one of the lorry drivers, emphasized the poor condition of the road, describing it as “dark, dangerous, and poorly maintained.” Another driver, José Azevedo, who filmed the aftermath of the crash, corroborated Duarte’s account, asserting that Jota and his brother were not driving recklessly. Azevedo, who frequently navigates that section of the A52 highway, stated he has witnessed reckless driving in the past, yet described Jota’s driving as calm and controlled. Both drivers expressed their intentions to provide their eyewitness accounts to support Jota’s family, underscoring their conviction that the brothers were not speeding.

The investigations into the crash are ongoing as authorities sift through evidence and witness statements. Preliminary reports indicated that a tyre burst may have caused the Lamborghini to veer off course before it erupted into flames on a remote part of the A52 highway in the early hours of July 3. Compounding this tragedy is the revelation that Jota was en route to Santander to board a ferry back to England for Liverpool FC’s pre-season training, following a recent lung procedure that had prohibited him from flying.

In the wake of this devastating loss, an outpouring of tributes flooded in from the football community. The Portuguese Football Federation issued a heartfelt statement, mourning the loss of Jota and Silva as “irreparable.” They vowed to honor the brothers’ legacy within Portuguese football. Additionally, Liverpool FC expressed their devastation at the news, even considering the retirement of Jota’s number 20 shirt—a first for the club—signifying the profound impact he had on the team. Various other clubs, including FC Porto, where Jota had previously played, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the collective grief shared across the football world.

Having recently celebrated his marriage to Rute Cardoso just two weeks before the crash, Jota’s passing is further stained by the loss of a father of three children. This personal tragedy reverberates deeply, affecting not just the football community but also the family and friends involved. The couple had embarked on a new chapter in their lives, only for it to end abruptly. The juxtaposition of joy and sorrow encapsulates the devastating nature of this incident, shocking those who knew and loved him.

The aftermath of this incident is still unfolding as investigators analyze evidence and witness testimonies to determine the true cause of the crash. The challenges to the police narrative regarding Jota’s speed may indeed shift the investigation’s focus, emphasizing the potential road conditions rather than driver error. As the football world grapples with this profound loss, the legacy of Diogo Jota and André Silva will endure, prompting reflection on the fragility of life and the impact of sudden tragedy. The discourse surrounding the events will likely continue, as the community seeks to find clarity in the chaos and honor the lives lost in a promising future that was tragically cut short.
