Scott Turner, HUD Secretary and Former Redskins Player, Supports Trump’s Push for Commanders to Revert to Original Name

President Donald Trump recently expressed support for the return of the Washington Redskins name amid ongoing debates regarding sports team nicknames. This call was echoed by Scott Turner, the current Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and a former NFL player who was drafted by the Redskins in 1995. In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, Turner emphasized his pride in the team’s former name, aligning himself with Trump’s sentiment, which indicated a push for the name’s revival amid growing calls from segments of the fanbase.

On that same day, Trump made two posts on Truth Social, urging not only the Washington Commanders but also the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball to reconsider their names. He argued that there existed a significant desire from fans and Indigenous communities to revert to the original names, stating that their heritage was being undermined. Trump further asserted that the time for change had come, urging team owners to consider the overwhelming support for this cause and to act accordingly.

Trump’s rhetoric took a sharper tone as he hinted at potential repercussions regarding the Commanders’ future plans related to the RFK Stadium site, should they not return to the Redskins name. He stated his intent to possibly block any deals for the stadium unless the team reverted to its former identity, underlining how he believed the franchise would ultimately benefit from restoring its historic name. This sharp pivot in rhetoric signals how intertwined sports, community identity, and business considerations have become in contemporary discussions.

The name change of the Washington team occurred in 2020, spearheaded by then-owner Daniel Snyder amid a backdrop of national protests against racial inequality. Snyder’s decision to rename the franchise was met with both support and backlash, and the team eventually adopted the name “Washington Commanders.” However, recent ownership transition to Josh Harris has not swayed the current administration toward reverting back to the Redskins identity. Harris stated in an interview that the Commanders name had been well received within the organization, noting its unique appeal to players and fans alike.

Harris also emphasized the significance of the current name in relationship to the military context of the city, aiming to foster a sense of community around the new branding. He portrayed an optimistic future for the Commanders, highlighting the distinct identity they are building and the positive reception of the new name among fans and team staff. Despite Trump and Turner’s calls for change, Harris remains resolute in the organization’s commitment to the Commanders name, indicating a divergence between the direction proposed by Trump and the ownership’s vision for the franchise.

As this debate unfolds, it poses wider questions regarding the intersection of sports, culture, and identity in America. While some argue for historical names that resonate with certain traditions and legacies, others push for change that reflects contemporary values of inclusivity and respect. This ongoing conversation underscores the complex dynamics at play in professional sports, where branding, community ties, and cultural sensitivities intersect, shaping not only how teams are viewed but also how they operate within their respective communities and across the nation.
