Exclusive: Trump Tells ‘Pod Force One’ He Urged EU to Abandon ‘Ugly Windmills’: ‘Con Job’

In a recent conversation with columnist Miranda Devine, President Donald Trump expressed his discontent with wind turbines dotting the European landscape, referring to them as “ugly windmills.” During his remarks on the podcast “Pod Force One,” he urged the European Union to cease the proliferation of these renewable energy sources, particularly highlighting their unsightliness as he observed them while golfing at his Trump Turnberry resort in Scotland. Trump lamented how these structures mar the natural beauty of Europe’s valleys and mountains, illustrating his view that they detract from the picturesque scenery. His comments suggest a preference for traditional aesthetics over modern renewable energy installations.

Trump’s critique extended beyond aesthetics to environmental concerns. He characterized the push for wind energy as a “con job” by environmentalists, arguing that they don’t genuinely champion renewable energy. He cited the negative impacts of wind turbines, such as bird fatalities and noise pollution, and referenced studies indicating substantial declines in property values for homes located near these structures. With over 366,000 birds reportedly killed by wind turbines in the U.S. in 2012 and a growing number of turbines in both the U.S. and Europe, he painted a grim picture of the consequences of wind energy.

Further, Trump claimed that wind turbines are economically unviable, suggesting that they require significant subsidies and ultimately lose money. His narrative positioned wind energy as not only environmentally detrimental but also financially unsustainable. He underscored that many turbines, once installed, are abandoned, leading to a legacy of rusting infrastructure that represents a financial burden rather than a benefit. Trump’s assertions resonate with a faction of critics who believe that the long-term costs of wind energy outweigh its purported benefits.

The context of Trump’s remarks was intertwined with trade negotiations with the European Union, which were underscored by his desire for the bloc to invest heavily in U.S. energy. He urged EU nations to commit to purchasing $750 billion in American energy products. This call for investment was part of a larger trade deal with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that included promises of significant European investments in the U.S., military equipment purchases, and stipulations regarding tariffs on goods exchanged between the two entities.

In his conversation, Trump emphasized the broader implications of this trade agreement, claiming it to be the largest ever negotiated. He projected that the deal would bring nations closer together on various fronts, from military funding to economic cooperation. His assertions about NATO’s financial responsibilities indicated a shift in payment dynamics, with Europe expected to shoulder expenses previously covered by the U.S. These declarations not only highlight Trump’s administration’s focus on energy independence and military funding but also suggest a transactional approach to international relations that prioritizes U.S. financial interests.

Despite the bold claims and sweeping predictions made by Trump, representatives from the EU and its delegation in Washington remained silent on the matter, providing no immediate comments or clarifications regarding the proposed energy purchases or the implications of his criticisms of wind energy. The lack of response reflects the complexities and sensitivities in international diplomacy, especially as countries navigate conflicting priorities around energy policies, economic partnerships, and environmental considerations.
