Finding Care for Your Pet While You’re on Vacation

Planning a summer getaway can be a thrilling experience, but it often presents challenges for pet owners who lack reliable caretakers for their furry companions. Fortunately, various options exist that allow owners to enjoy their vacations without worry. From hiring a pet sitter to choosing boarding facilities or even taking pets along, there are solutions to ensure pets receive the care they need while their owners are away. Insights from veterinarians and animal trainers can guide pet owners in making informed decisions about the best arrangements for their cherished animals.

One of the most favored options is hiring a professional pet sitter. This approach allows pets to remain in their familiar surroundings, which helps maintain their normal routine and reduces stress. Dr. Liza Cahn from Embrace Pet Insurance emphasizes that a pet sitter can offer dedicated, one-on-one care tailored to each pet’s specific requirements. This could involve multiple visits throughout the day or full-time overnight care. Additionally, some veterinary clinics might provide pet-sitting services by trained staff, which can be particularly beneficial for pets with health concerns. However, potential costs can rise quickly, and this option may not be feasible for pets requiring continuous attention.

For those whose pets are more social, boarding facilities or dog daycare services can be a prime choice. According to Dion Studinski, founder of Ancillary K9 dog training, these settings offer opportunities for pets to interact with others and partake in structured activities, making them ideal for energetic animals. Many boarding kennels even provide enticing “vacation packages.” However, it’s important to note that this lively environment may not suit all pets, particularly those with anxiety or health issues. Pet owners should be aware of the risk of illness transmission in these communal settings.

An emerging trend in pet care is home-boarding, where pets stay at a sitter’s home instead of a traditional kennel. Dr. Cahn considers this a balanced option that melds the comforts of a home with personalized attention. Typically more relaxed than conventional boarding, home-boarding is often more cost-effective than hiring a sitter for in-home care. Despite its advantages, pet owners should carefully consider their pets’ personalities and training levels to determine the most suitable arrangement, ensuring they ask vital questions before making any commitments.

For those who prefer not to separate from their pets, the rise of pet-friendly vacation options can offer great alternatives. Road trips, in particular, are often deemed the most dog-friendly getaway. Studinski suggests planning stops for walks and play to keep pets active and content. Destinations with outdoor access and pet-friendly amenities, such as hiking spots or beaches, are also highly recommended. However, traveling with pets necessitates thorough preparation; owners should carry veterinary records, extra medications, and a pet first-aid kit. Despite the appeal of traveling together, Dr. Cahn warns that pets often thrive on routine, and the uncertainties of travel can be unsettling.

Ultimately, the decision regarding pet care while on vacation should consider each pet’s age, temperament, and health requirements, along with the owner’s comfort level. Whether it’s opting for a personalized home visit, a social pet hotel, or embarking on a road trip, ensuring pet safety and well-being is paramount. Each owner must weigh their choices carefully to determine the best solution for their furry friends, with the confidence that they are making the right decision for their pets’ happiness and health.
