McCloskeys Reclaim AR-15 Rifle Five Years After Confrontation During Black Lives Matter Protest

In June 2020, Mark and Patricia McCloskey, a St. Louis couple, became national news when they brandished guns in response to Black Lives Matter protesters marching near their property. This event occurred as protesters broke through a gate leading to their private street, prompting the couple to feel threatened and arm themselves with an AR-15 and a pistol. The video of the incident garnered significant media attention and divided opinions in the country, with many seeing it as a defense of property rights, while others criticized it as emblematic of the growing tensions surrounding the protests.

Following the incident, the McCloskeys faced legal troubles, as they were charged with unlawful use of a weapon by St. Louis’ then-Democratic prosecutor, Kim Gardner. The situation escalated into a protracted legal battle, which included multiple lawsuits and appeals. Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt intervened to dismiss the charges brought by Gardner, emphasizing a belief in the McCloskeys’ right to defend their home. Despite the tumult, the couple remained steadfast in their position, asserting that they acted out of a sense of danger.

In 2021, the McCloskeys pleaded guilty to lesser charges of misdemeanor fourth-degree assault and second-degree harassment. However, they received a pardon from Missouri Governor Mike Parson later, which indicated a shift in the political climate surrounding their case. This pardon, along with a recent appeals court ruling that expunged their misdemeanor convictions, has allowed the couple a path toward reclaiming their firearms, which had been seized by authorities during the legal proceedings.

After nearly five years and extensive legal maneuvering, the couple recently announced that they had regained possession of their AR-15. Mark McCloskey expressed his relief on social media, marking the moment as a significant victory against what he described as oppressive governmental overreach. He stated that reclaiming the firearm took an extensive amount of effort, illustrating a firm stance on the principle of personal responsibility in defending one’s freedom and property rights.

Mark noted that despite the challenges, he believed individuals must stand firm against what they perceive as unjust actions by the government. He indicated that he expects to have his wife’s pistol returned shortly, emphasizing the emotional weight of their struggle to reclaim their possessions. The McCloskeys’ experience resonates with a larger narrative concerning Second Amendment rights and individual liberty, drawing both support and criticism from varying political affiliations.

The McCloskeys’ saga encapsulates the intense debates surrounding personal defense, government authority, and the broader context of civil rights in an increasingly polarized America. Their story continues to evoke reactions from those who view their actions as either a necessary defense against perceived threats or a troubling example of vigilantism in the face of social movements. As they reclaim their firearms and share their perspective, the couple remains emblematic of contentious discussions around firearm ownership and individual rights in today’s society.
