Investigation Reveals Possible Illegal Funding of AWOL Texas Dems’ Exodus by Beto O’Rourke’s Nonprofit

Following reports of financial support from Beto O’Rourke’s nonprofit, Powered by People, to Texas Democrats who fled the state, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an investigation into the actions of the lawmakers. This exodus aimed to thwart Republican redistricting efforts that could reshape congressional maps in Texas. In response to the Democrats’ absence, Texas House Republicans authorized civil arrest warrants to compel the lawmakers back to the House, with Governor Greg Abbott calling on state police to help enforce these warrants. However, the civil arrest warrants have limited enforceability outside of Texas, creating questions about how the state will execute these actions.

Amid this political strife, it was reported that O’Rourke’s nonprofit was significantly funding the logistics for the fleeing lawmakers, including transport, lodging, and assistance with penalties incurred for their absences. The financial support raised allegations from Paxton that such actions might violate Texas bribery laws and other statutes governing campaign finance. He described Powered by People as one of the main organizations backing the Democrat lawmakers in their efforts to obstruct Republican redistricting, which they argue is crucial for preventing racial gerrymandering.

In his announcement, Paxton stated, “Any Democrat coward breaking the law by taking a Beto Bribe will be held accountable. Texas cannot be bought,” reinforcing his commitment to pursuing legal actions against the lawmakers. O’Rourke retaliated against Paxton’s accusations, labeling him a “thug” and a briber himself—an ironic twist given Paxton’s impeachment on corruption charges earlier in 2023, from which he was acquitted. O’Rourke characterized the investigation as a distraction from Republicans’ attempts to manipulate congressional representation.

Paxton’s investigation seeks detailed communications and documents from Powered by People concerning the alleged unlawful financing activities. Notably, O’Rourke is purportedly orchestrating efforts, encouraging lawmakers to vacate Texas to hinder the GOP’s legislative agenda. The nonprofit is actively soliciting donations on its website, assuring supporters that their contributions will aid Texas Democrats in countering what they perceive as a power grab by Trump and his allies.

Reflecting on his motivations during a recent CNN interview, O’Rourke reaffirmed his commitment to the Democratic cause. He argued that if the current situation escalates unchecked, it could bring about an “unstoppable consolidation of authoritarian power” in America. When pressed by anchor Pamela Brown about the potential for these funds to be better utilized for the benefit of vulnerable Texans, O’Rourke maintained that their efforts could effectively delay and potentially stop the Republican agenda in Texas.

Ultimately, the confrontation between state Republicans and Democrats highlights the increasing polarization in U.S. politics, particularly in Texas, where redistricting has become a contentious battleground. O’Rourke’s approach, though controversial, reflects a strategy he believes is necessary to counter GOP maneuvers at the national level. His claims of illegitimate GOP power grabs and calls for activism underscore the ongoing struggle for political control in the state, drawing significant attention as both parties prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.
