Brave Gen Z Traveler Exchanges Homes with a Stranger Abroad to Cut Costs: ‘I Felt Nervous in the Months Leading Up to It’

Sara Holt, a 27-year-old resident of Copenhagen, has turned her travel dreams into reality by embracing a home-swapping scheme reminiscent of the film “The Holiday.” With rising accommodation costs being a major barrier to affordable travel, Holt sought a creative solution to enjoy a summer in Paris without the steep hotel bills. She believed that by exchanging homes, she could minimize her travel expenses while still experiencing the charm and lifestyle of another city.

Holt’s journey began with a video she posted, inviting potential home-swappers to reach out. She eventually connected with a woman in Paris, someone she had been following on social media. As the travel dates approached, she felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety, particularly fearing last-minute cancellations that could ruin her plans. This uncertainty around home exchanges, which typically lack refund policies, made her apprehensive, but thankfully, both parties honored their commitments.

In mid-July, Holt’s dream materialized as she flew to Paris, where she spent a week. While living in another person’s home felt initially strange, the space quickly transformed into a cozy sanctuary. The host welcomed her with thoughtful touches, such as a clean environment, a curated list of local recommendations, and delightful gifts of wine and chocolates. This personal welcome set a positive tone for her stay and helped ease any discomfort she felt.

Throughout her visit, communication with her Parisian host proved beneficial. They exchanged questions and local tips, enhancing Holt’s experience and making it feel as if she had a personal guide in the city. This open dialogue allowed her not only to navigate Paris more confidently but also to immerse herself in the local culture, significantly enriching her travel narrative.

Living in a local’s home also afforded Holt the luxury of a kitchen, allowing her to enjoy meals like a resident rather than the standard hotel fare. She treasured the chance to engage in “everyday life” in Paris, which felt more authentic than a typical tourism experience. This local experience was invaluable, offering her a glimpse of what it’s like to live in one of the world’s most celebrated cities.

Financially, Holt’s trip was an undisputed success. She spent just over $600 on flights, meals, drinks, and shopping, which turned out to be a fraction of what a hotel stay would have cost. While the financial savings were significant, Holt emphasized that the true highlight of her journey was the enriching experience of living as a local. Her adventure is a testament to the potential benefits of home swapping, combining practicality with genuine cultural immersion.
