A man is in critical condition following a violent encounter in a Sydney park, where he was stabbed in the back during a confrontation with a group of teenagers. The incident unfolded late at night, around 10:10 PM, when the victim, riding home from work, was allegedly pursued by a group of teens. At an intersection in Annandale, he was knocked off his bicycle and assaulted, which included both punches and kicks. With the assistance of two passersby, the man managed to escape but later returned to Federal Park with five friends to confront the aggressors.
Upon returning to the park, the victim identified one of the teenagers responsible for the earlier attack, leading to another altercation between his group and the young males, aged 14 to 15. During this new confrontation, one of the teenagers brandished a knife. In the chaos, the victim sustained multiple stab wounds while fleeing the scene. Chief Inspector Grant Watson, the Crime Manager at the Leichhardt police area command, described the stabbing incident and emphasized the severity of the situation, highlighting the number of times the victim had been stabbed.
Emergency services responded promptly after being alerted about the stabbing at around 10:45 PM. Paramedics arrived at the scene, close to the Tramsheds food and shopping complex, and provided immediate medical attention to the victim. He was subsequently transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit. Earlier fears for his life have since eased, and according to Watson, his prognosis appears to be improving.
In addition to the main victim, five of his companions who were present during the incident received medical care at the scene, with three of them also needing hospitalization. Their injuries were not detailed, but the presence of multiple injuries necessitated their treatment. This added to the chaotic scene, raising questions about the level of violence that erupted among the groups.
Detectives continue to investigate the situation, but the police have not established any connections between the two groups prior to the altercation.
