Former Officials Author Letter Criticizing Kash Patel’s FBI ‘Purge’

A group of former officials, including ex-FBI, intelligence, and national security agents, has voiced strong criticism of FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino following the dismissal of several FBI agents. The group, identifying as The Steady State, contends that agents Brian Driscoll, Michael Feinberg, and Walter Giardina were terminated as part of a broader scheme to undermine the FBI’s longstanding independence, effectively transforming it into a politically loyal entity aligned with President Trump’s interests. They express concerns that this change threatens the integrity of the FBI as a public institution dedicated to law enforcement and civil liberties.

The letter from The Steady State highlights the disturbing trend of prioritizing loyalty to political leaders over adherence to the law, drawing parallels to authoritarian regimes that demand allegiance from intelligence and security services, which often leads to catastrophic outcomes. They argue that the departures signal a shift from a respected, constitutionally grounded investigative agency to a factionalized enforcement wing of the current administration. The letter asserts that while some changes may be framed as reforms, the true goal appears to be consolidating control over the FBI to serve specific political ends.

The group also emphasizes the crucial role the FBI has historically played in upholding democratic principles, noting that its independence is vital for maintaining the balance between civil liberties and national security. They encourage current FBI employees to remain steadfast in their mission, reminding them that the public is watching closely and that history will evaluate their actions. The recently fired agents reportedly include individuals who had significant roles in investigations related to Trump and the January 6 Capitol riots, raising questions about the implications of these dismissals on ongoing inquiries.

On the day of the firings, the FBI ousted Driscoll, the former acting director, alongside Giardina and others, with no comments forthcoming from Patel or Bongino regarding the rationale behind their dismissals. In official communications, Patel cited “poor judgment” and a “lack of impartiality” from the terminated agents, framing their removals as necessary measures against the perceived politicization of the bureau. This narrative is causing palpable anxiety among FBI personnel, particularly given the rumors of an internal purge aimed at disloyalty.

Adding to concerns, reports surfaced regarding a questionnaire distributed to FBI staff earlier this year, probing their involvement in the January 6 investigations. This inquiry has raised fears among agents that it might be used as a tool for retaliation against those perceived to be against the Trump administration’s narrative. The fallout from these events has intensified scrutiny on the actions of the current administration and its impacts on the FBI’s operational integrity and independence.

Amidst these developments, Trump has not ruled out potential actions against FBI employees involved in the January 6 investigations, further emphasizing his belief that the bureau is deeply flawed and requiring significant reform. The crisis reflects a growing divide within the FBI, an institution traditionally seen as a nonpartisan agency committed to law and justice, now under the stress of political alignments and power struggles derived from the current administration’s directives. As this situation unfolds, the broader implications for the FBI and its role in American democracy continue to be a topic of intense debate and concern.
