Bill Cobbs, aged 90, passes away; known as a seasoned character actor

Bill Cobbs, a prolific actor with over 200 credits to his name, passed away at the age of 90 at his home in California. The cause of death was not disclosed, but his family confirmed the news on Facebook, describing him as a beloved partner, brother, uncle, and friend who had recently celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by loved ones. Cobbs, born Wilbert Fransicso Cobbs in Cleveland, Ohio, had a diverse career that spanned television, film, and theater.

Before pursuing acting, Cobbs spent eight years as a radar technician in the Air Force, where he started doing standup comedy. He eventually landed his first professional acting role in Ride a Black Horse at the Negro Ensemble Company, leading to appearances in small theater productions, street theater, and regional theater. His television debut came on the children’s series Vegetable Soup, followed by guest roles on popular sitcoms like Good Times and Baby…I’m Back!

Cobbs made his big-screen debut in the 1974 thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and went on to appear in films such as The Bodyguard, Demolition Man, and Night at the Museum. Throughout his career, he also had regular or recurring roles on television shows such as I’ll Fly Away, The Others, and The Drew Carey Show. Cobbs was known for his versatility as an actor, effortlessly transitioning between drama, comedy, and sci-fi genres with ease.

In addition to his acting work, Cobbs was recognized with a Daytime Emmy Award in 2020 for his performance on Dino Dana, a television program about dinosaurs. His final on-screen credit was in the TV miniseries Incandescent Love, released in 2023. Throughout his career, Cobbs made appearances in a wide range of television series, including The Sopranos, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., showcasing his talent and versatility as an actor.

Despite his impressive body of work, Cobbs remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his six-decade-long career. His passing was met with an outpouring of love and condolences from fans, colleagues, and industry peers. His legacy as a talented and versatile actor will undoubtedly live on through his extensive body of work, showcasing his ability to bring depth and authenticity to every role he portrayed. Bill Cobbs will be remembered not only for his contributions to the entertainment industry but also for the impact he had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of working with him.
