Donovan Clingan, a former UConn star, was hoping to contend for a third consecutive national championship, but coach Dan Hurley had other plans. Clingan played a crucial role in helping the Huskies secure a second straight title earlier in the year, with the team winning every tournament game by double digits and claiming their sixth championship in school history. The big man’s standout performance in the tournament solidified his status as a top-10 draft pick, averaging 15.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Despite his desire to return for another title, Coach Hurley advised Clingan to leave, ultimately leading him to declare for the draft.

Clingan spent two successful seasons at UConn and expressed his love for the school, the coaching staff, his teammates, and the overall environment at UConn. However, Hurley’s advice pushed him to move forward, and Clingan ended up going seventh overall to the Portland Trail Blazers in the draft. The 7-foot-2 center showcased his shot-altering abilities, averaging 13 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game in his final season at UConn. His offensive skills continued to improve, complementing his already dominant defensive game. Clingan will now join a frontcourt featuring Deandre Ayton, Jerami Grant, and last year’s second overall pick, Scoot Henderson.

Portland finished at the bottom of the Western Conference standings last season with a record of 21-61 after parting ways with star player Damian Lillard. With the addition of Clingan, the Trail Blazers look to bolster their roster and bring a new dynamic to their frontcourt. The Associated Press contributed to the coverage of Clingan’s journey to the NBA draft and his selection by Portland. The storyline of Clingan’s decision-making process and eventual selection in the NBA draft illustrates the journey of a talented player transitioning from the college ranks to the professional league. Despite his desire to return to UConn for a shot at a third championship, Clingan received valuable advice from Coach Hurley, ultimately leading him to pursue his dream of playing in the NBA. His dedication, hard work, and skills on the court propelled him to a top-10 draft pick, where he will now have the opportunity to contribute to the Trail Blazers’ roster and make an impact in the league. Fans and supporters can stay tuned for Clingan’s continued growth and development in the NBA as he embarks on this new chapter in his basketball career.

Clingan’s emotional connection to UConn and his reluctance to leave the school highlight the importance of the bonds formed between players, coaches, and teammates in the collegiate setting. While his departure may have been bittersweet, it signifies a new beginning and an exciting future for Clingan as he embarks on his professional basketball journey. With his impressive skill set and drive to succeed, Clingan is poised to make a significant impact in the NBA and solidify his place as a rising star in the league. As he enters this new chapter in his career, fans and supporters can look forward to witnessing Clingan’s continued success and growth as he navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the NBA.
