Travel without flying: Explore Europe’s cooler destinations by train

As Europe experiences scorching heatwaves, tourists are seeking cooler destinations to escape the extreme temperatures. According to a survey by the European Travel Commission, 76% of European travelers are adapting their behavior due to the climate crisis. With flying being a contributing factor to climate change, train travel is seen as a more sustainable option. There are seven destinations in Europe that can be reached by train, all offering temperatures in and below the low 20s.

One of the coldest places in Europe that can be reached by train is Amsterdam, Netherlands. Known for its mild summers, Amsterdam offers a relaxed escape with temperatures in the low 20s. Visitors can explore the city’s canals, museums, and historic sites without breaking a sweat. Direct trains to Amsterdam run from various European cities, including Paris, Brussels, London, Berlin, and Milan.

In Germany, the alpine town of Berchtesgaden is another cooling destination accessible by train. Home to Funtensee, a karst lake with record-low temperatures, Berchtesgaden offers a refreshing escape from the summer heat. With daytime temperatures in the mid-to-late teens, visitors can enjoy a cooling dip in the lake surrounded by green mountains. The town can be reached by train from London, Milan, Brussels, and Paris.

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in France is a great option for those seeking sub-zero temperatures. Visitors can experience the chill of Mont Blanc’s summit, the highest mountain in the Alps. The town of Chamonix offers daytime temperatures in the teens and low 20s, with the option to take an aerial lift to a peak in the Mont Blanc massif for cooler climes. Chamonix town can be reached by train from London, Paris, and Milan.

Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, offers a hygge lifestyle with temperatures in the low 20s. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely glide down the canals, visit museums, and relax in a floating hot tub. Copenhagen is accessible by train from London, Paris, Berlin, and Hamburg, offering a relaxing escape from the summer heat.

Edinburgh, UK, is another cool destination with temperatures ranging from 15-17°C. Visitors can explore the city’s historic architecture, climb Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views, and enjoy the cooler weather. Edinburgh is easily accessible by train from London, Paris, Brussels, Milan, and Berlin.

Liverpool, UK, offers temperatures in the high teens and refreshing British showers, making it an ideal destination for a breezy getaway. The city is known for its culture, including sites related to The Beatles and the iconic Liverpool Cathedral. Liverpool can be reached by train from London, Paris, and Barcelona, offering a cool respite from the summer heat.

Oslo, Norway, offers temperatures in the mid-teens to early 20s, providing a refreshing escape from the heat. Visitors can swim, picnic, and explore the Oslo Fjord, as well as seek shelter in urban saunas and museums. Oslo is accessible by train from Hamburg, Brussels, Paris, Copenhagen, and Gothenburg, offering a cool and picturesque getaway.
