Wordle #1128: Hints, Clues, and Answer – Sunday, July 21st

Looking for Saturday’s Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here: Sunday bloody Sunday. That’s a song, though not an entirely happy song, but one that I want to post here today because it’s definitely one of U2’s very best. Do you have a favorite U2 song? Alright, let’s do this Wordle! The Hint: Horton hears a Who on one of these. The Clue: This Wordle has far more consonants than vowels. The Answer: Similar word to yesterday’s, beginning and ending with two consonants with just one vowel in the center. I also got today’s in just three, thank goodness. CLOSE was actually shockingly good, leaving me with just four words to choose from. I guessed SCENT because a couple of the options I came up with had ‘SC’ in the beginning, and the only other word I could think of—SPECK—also had a ‘C’. I wish I’d guessed it instead, but it just didn’t make sense, ya know? Once again, I get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying the Bot. I’ll take it! How To Play Competitive Wordle: Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points. If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day. Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative. You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy! Today’s Wordle Etymology: The word “speck” originates from the Old English word “spek,” which means “small spot, stain, blemish.” This term likely stems from Proto-Germanic *spekka-, a term used to describe small particles or spots. The word has related forms in other Germanic languages, such as the Middle Low German “spekke” and the Middle Dutch “specke,” both meaning “spot” or “speck.” Over time, the word evolved to mean any small particle or dot, retaining its connotation of something tiny or insignificant. Be sure to check out my blog for my daily Wordle and Strands guides as well as all my other writing about TV shows, streaming guides, movie reviews, video game coverage and much more. Thanks for stopping by! Oh, and I’ve started a book-themed Instagram page that’s just getting off the ground if anyone wants to follow me there.
