Calorie-conscious individuals may question whether they can still enjoy alcoholic beverages without compromising their healthy eating habits. While alcoholic drinks do contain empty calories, experts emphasize that moderation is key when indulging. Abbey Sharp, a dietitian, stresses that being too restrictive in one’s diet can lead to bingeing. Alcohol, like other fun foods, can contribute to emotional satisfaction and enjoyment in life. When consuming alcohol, it’s important to be mindful of the caloric content of different cocktails.

When it comes to the caloric content of various alcoholic beverages, most types, including vodka, red wine, hard seltzers, and cider, contain approximately 100 calories per serving. However, mixers such as simple syrup, juice, or margarita mixes can add additional calories to a drink, resulting in some cocktails containing up to 400 calories. To keep caloric intake lower, it is recommended to opt for mixers like diet soda or zero-calorie soda. Leslie Bonci, a dietician, advises that minimizing calorie consumption can often be achieved by choosing the right mixers for a cocktail.

Sparkling wines like Prosecco are a good option for those looking to enjoy a low-calorie alcoholic beverage. With about 100 calories per serving, these wines are served in smaller portions and the bubbles can help individuals feel full. Adding kombucha or a vinegar-based shrub instead of juice can further reduce the calorie content of cocktails without sacrificing flavor. Similarly, light beer and hard seltzers are lower in calories due to their lower alcohol content and lack of added sugars.

For those who enjoy spritzes, options like Aperol spritzes and Hugo spritzes are a great choice for a low-calorie beverage. Mixing soda water with a small amount of alcohol creates a fizzy drink that is lower in calories. Mojitos, when made without added sugar, can also be a good option. The combination of lime and mint provides flavor without significantly increasing calories. Bloody Mary’s, made with vodka and tomato juice, are another low-calorie option. Eliminating high-calorie garnishes can further reduce the overall calorie count of the drink.

Creating cocktails with one’s favorite liquor and soda water or flavored seltzer water can be a fun way to enjoy a low-calorie drink. Experimenting with herbs, citrus, and bitters can add flavor without extra calories. Fresh ginger or frozen fruit can enhance sweetness without the need for added sugars. By being mindful of ingredients and mixers, individuals can continue to enjoy alcoholic beverages while maintaining a calorie-conscious approach to their diet.
