Which type of sunscreen is better: Chemical or Mineral?

Sunscreen is an essential aspect of skin care routine recommended by experts regardless of skin type or issues. It prevents sunburn, UV damage, premature signs of aging, and aids in managing skin conditions such as rosacea and melanoma. Therefore, finding a sunscreen that is enjoyable to use every day can have a significant impact on overall skin health. When choosing a sunscreen, it should contain at least SPF 30, provide broad-spectrum protection, feel and look nice, and not be expired. There are two main types of sunscreen – chemical and mineral, each with its own set of benefits and suitable for different skin types. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV light, while mineral sunscreens create a barrier on the skin. Each type has unique formulations and may better suit specific skin needs.

The SPF value of sunscreen is another important factor to consider when selecting a product. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends an SPF of 30 or higher for daily use, offering protection against 97% of the sun’s UV rays. Higher SPFs are recommended for prolonged exposure to sunlight. Experts emphasize the importance of consistently reapplying sunscreen every two hours when outdoors or after getting wet. Sunscreen comes in various forms such as creams, gels, sprays, sticks, lotions, serums, and powders. The best sunscreen for individual use is the one that they are likely to use consistently. While all types of sunscreen are protective, some formats may require more careful application for full benefits.

Makeup products that contain SPF are not sufficient protection on their own, so they should be layered over a separate sunscreen for maximum benefits. Products labeled as non-comedogenic are suitable for acne-prone skin, while those playing sports should opt for sweat-proof sunscreen. Spending extended time outdoors requires higher SPF protection, and sunscreen should be reapplied every two to four hours. A tinted sunscreen can be a good option for light protective coverage. Overall, the best sunscreen is one that meets basic criteria and is easy to incorporate into a daily routine. Ease of use and enjoyment of application can significantly impact the effectiveness of skin protection.
