Retta, a well-known actor, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in July 2023, which came as a surprise to her as she had never paid much attention to her glucose levels. Initially resistant to taking medication, she eventually realized the necessity of managing her blood sugar levels. Through her partnership with Dexcom and Beyond Type 2, Retta is working to raise awareness about glucose health and the importance of monitoring levels for diabetics.

Before her diagnosis, Type 2 diabetes was not something Retta had considered, and she was unaware of any family history of the condition. However, she has since made adjustments to her diet, particularly when she is traveling for work. Retta emphasized the importance of monitoring glucose levels, as diabetes is characterized by poor utilization of glucose and high sugar levels. With the help of glucose biosensors like Dexcom’s Stelo, Retta has been able to track her levels more closely and make changes to her diet to manage her condition.

Glucose monitoring is essential for diabetics, as high sugar levels can lead to a range of health complications over time, including eye disease, chronic kidney disease, and nerve damage. Retta has been managing her diabetes with medication and diet modifications, with the goal of eventually being able to manage her condition without medication. While there is no cure for Type 2 diabetes, some can manage the condition through weight management.

For those who are not diabetic, monitoring glucose levels may not be top of mind, but it is essential for early detection of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. One in five Americans are unaware that they have diabetes, highlighting the importance of screening for the condition. Over time, mismanaged glucose levels can lead to various health complications, including heart disease and stroke. Screening for prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes is recommended starting at age 35, according to the CDC.

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include increased thirst and hunger, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision. The condition is characterized by issues in the production of insulin in the pancreas and the body’s response to insulin, leading to high levels of glucose in the blood. Retta’s experience with Type 2 diabetes serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring glucose levels and taking proactive steps to manage the condition. Through initiatives like National Glucose Awareness Week, she is working to raise awareness and provide valuable information about glucose health.
