New Memoir Reveals Insights on Addiction and Its Impact on Cardiac Health

Singer Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter Riley Keough has written a new memoir titled “From Here to the Great Unknown,” shedding light on the health challenges her mother faced throughout her life. The book features reflections on Presley’s life from both mother and daughter, and outlines struggles with opioid addiction, body image, and heart health. Following the birth of her twin daughters Harper and Finley in 2008, Presley began taking opioids for pain which later developed into an addiction as she used the drugs as a coping mechanism after leaving the church of Scientology. Her addiction continued through rehab stints, with Presley admitting to taking up to 80 pills a day.

Presley’s addiction continued to worsen, and she was eventually ordered to attend rehab in Los Angeles. However, the medications given to help wean her off opioids only made her more high. After a seizure, Presley decided to change her life, but eventually went into cardiac arrest and died in January 2023. Presley had a family history of heart issues, as her father Elvis Presley died from a heart attack at a young age. Keough also reveals in the memoir that Presley had her uterus removed in 2022 after experiencing health problems.

The autopsy report revealed that Presley died from complications from a bariatric weight-loss surgery she had undergone years before, specifically due to a small bowel obstruction. Keough mentions in the memoir that Presley had decided to get bariatric surgery while in rehab, despite not being done with her program. The obstruction, caused by scar tissue from the surgery, led to a blockage in Presley’s small intestine, ultimately resulting in her death. Leading up to her death, Presley exhibited signs of sickness including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fevers.

Through her memoir, Keough aims to provide insight into her mother’s health challenges before her death, including her struggles with addiction and heart issues. The book highlights Presley’s battle with opioids, body image, and the decision to undergo bariatric surgery. Keough also delves into the impact of Presley’s addiction on her family, as well as the warning signs of sickness that were evident before her death. The memoir serves as a tribute to Presley’s life and a reminder of the importance of addressing health issues early on to prevent more serious consequences in the future.
