A Contrast of Two Savoies: Classic Ski Resorts versus Eco-Friendly Tourism

A local resident of Saint-Gervais in the French Alps shares her perspective on the two opposing visions for the region – Savoie and Haute-Savoie. The region is undergoing significant changes with the introduction of new sustainable transport systems like the Valléen gondola, Alpine gondola, and Ascenseur des Thermes funicular. These initiatives are part of the town’s move towards modern mountain tourism, allowing easier access to the ski slopes, thermal baths, and town center.

The Valléen gondola, which connects Le Fayet to Saint-Gervais, has become a popular mode of transport for locals and visitors alike due to its year-round schedule and ease of use. The gondola links to the Alpin gondola, providing access to the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area and other nearby resorts like Megève, Les Contamines-Montjoie, and Combloux. These transport updates are projected to reduce CO2 emissions and local road traffic significantly, making Saint-Gervais the only French mountain resort offering train and cable car access from major European railway lines.

Saint-Gervais is embracing a greener approach to tourism with initiatives like the Ascenseur des Thermes funicular, which is powered by wastewater. The town’s mayor emphasizes the importance of innovation and environmental responsibility in shaping the future of mountain access. The region of Haute-Savoie, including Saint-Gervais, prioritizes sustainability, wellness, and cultural tourism over mass-market ski resorts, setting it apart from its neighboring region of Savoie.

A rivalry between Saint-Gervais and neighboring Megève reflects the differing visions of the two towns – Megève focuses on luxury and exclusivity, while Saint-Gervais emphasizes accessibility and sustainability. Despite the competition, Saint-Gervais maintains its authenticity and sense of community, appealing to residents and visitors seeking a more genuine Alpine experience. The town offers a range of activities year-round, from skiing and mountain biking to open-water swimming and climbing, as well as a vibrant food scene and local cultural events.

As a resident of Saint-Gervais, the author appreciates the town’s authenticity and community atmosphere, contrasting it with purpose-built mega-resorts. The town’s charm lies in its living, breathing community, local artisan producers, farmers’ market, and affordable food scene. Saint-Gervais offers a balance of tradition and innovation, making it a unique destination in the modern Alpine landscape. Whether visitors come for the slopes, spas, or outdoor activities, they will find a place that is both old and new, reflecting the rich heritage and forward-thinking approach of Haute-Savoie.
