On a Southwest flight departing from Ronald Reagan International Airport in Arlington, Virginia, a patriotic moment occurred following the inauguration of President Donald Trump. A passenger on the flight broke into song, belting out Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” The man, who was later revealed to be a former veteran, had the entire plane’s attention, with many passengers joining in on the celebratory song. Matt Oakley, a performer from Nashville, Tennessee, captured the moment on TikTok, and the video went viral.

Oakley, who was on the flight, mentioned that he had also performed at two inaugural balls while he was in town for the presidential inauguration. He described the man leading the song as a former veteran who served the country, wearing a flannel shirt and a red “Make America Great Again” hat. Despite the divisive political climate, the moment on the plane brought strangers together in celebration of the country. Oakley expressed how special it was to witness everyone on the flight singing the praises of the United States, emphasizing the unity that was felt in that moment.

The video posted by Oakley captured the veteran standing in the front of the plane, passionately singing “God Bless the USA” with the kid next to Oakley also getting into the song towards the end. The heartwarming moment demonstrated the patriotic spirit that was prevalent among the passengers leaving the nation’s capital after the inauguration. Oakley mentioned that it was difficult to gauge exactly how many people joined in on the song, but the overall feeling was one of unity and shared love for the country despite any political differences that may exist among the passengers.
