AI is Unlikely to Ever Work Unsupervised, Especially for Major Tasks.

The European Union’s AI Act calls for human oversight of artificial intelligence, but it’s unclear what form this oversight will take. Similar legislation is expected to be implemented worldwide, with human oversight being essential from a business perspective. Dr. Johann Laux from the University of Oxford emphasized that human oversight is a shared responsibility between AI developers and users, but it may not always be effective in preventing errors in AI output. Certain industries, such as aviation systems, may find human oversight impractical.

Trust and confidence are key factors in determining whether AI can act independently. While AI is currently used for entertainment and small-scale recommendation engines, it is not yet ready for larger business tasks on an autonomous basis. Ding Zhao, from Carnegie Mellon University, highlighted that while confidence in personal entertainment AI may be high, significant issues need to be addressed before using AI in civil infrastructure like self-driving cars or healthcare. Instances of humans overruling AI decisions are common in industries like autonomous vehicles and healthcare.

Data transparency is a major concern when it comes to trusting AI operations, as the source of training data for large language models may be unknown, leading to potential biases. Trust in AI also varies across industries, with greater trust in predictive AI models in sectors like finance and manufacturing, compared to emerging applications like autonomous vehicles. Modern AI approaches may be less predictive and replicable than classical models, but upcoming trends like action-based language models and causality models could improve trust in AI outputs.

While demand for higher-order AI applications is expected to grow, human involvement is crucial in decision-making processes at these levels. Clarifying liability for AI decisions and defining responsibility levels between users and machines is essential. Ultimately, assigning authority to overrule or reverse AI decisions is a political question rather than a scientific one, with accountability falling on CIOs, CISOs, or IT leaders. Human intervention remains crucial in cases where AI fails to meet expectations, with testing and learning being critical for understanding the limitations of AI technology.

The goal of the human-AI relationship should focus on a balanced approach that combines human reasoning and intelligence with AI capabilities. Rather than aiming for fully automated processes, having human oversight allows for a safer and more responsible use of AI technology. Human intervention is necessary for verifying AI outputs, especially in cases where the output is inaccurate or off-topic. In conclusion, while AI can assist in decision-making processes, final decisions should ultimately be left to humans in order to ensure safe and responsible AI implementation.
