Al Roker Reflects on 2022 Health Crisis and Fitness Journey: ‘I Probably Wouldn’t Be Here Today’

Al Roker, the renowned anchor of “Today,” recently opened up about a serious health crisis he faced in late 2022. At the age of 70, he was hospitalized due to blood clots in both his legs and lungs, which forced him to miss NBC’s annual coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in nearly three decades. His condition worsened, leading to a second hospitalization in December, where he experienced internal bleeding from ulcers. This terrifying episode culminated in emergency surgery, which required doctors to remove part of his colon and his gall bladder. Reflecting on his journey, Roker remarked that his physical fitness played a crucial role in his recovery, acknowledging that without it, his prognosis could have been dire.

Roker’s wife, Deborah Roberts, also shared her perspective on the harrowing experience, describing it as “frightening beyond belief.” As an ABC News correspondent, Roberts emphasized the emotional toll this situation had on their family and relationship. The couple faced one of the toughest challenges of their lives, fearing the worst as Roker’s health continued to deteriorate. However, Roker’s resilience shone through when he made his return to “Today” in January 2023. During this broadcast, he disclosed that he had lost half of his blood and that doctors were still trying to determine the source of his bleeding. Despite the challenges, he expressed gratitude for his recovery and eagerness to return to work.

Throughout his health scare, Roker also provided insights into his ongoing commitment to weight management and overall health. In 2002, he underwent gastric bypass surgery after his weight reached over 300 pounds. In an interview with People, he emphasized that there is no “magic bullet” for weight loss; rather, it requires continuous effort and discipline. He acknowledged that while surgical options and weight-loss medications like Ozempic can aid in the process, they are merely tools and not solutions on their own. His candidness about his journey serves to inspire others who may be facing similar struggles.

Roker maintains a daily exercise regimen, which includes running on the treadmill and engaging in weight training. He believes in the importance of physical activity and often encourages himself to stay committed to his fitness goals. While he openly discusses the need to push oneself, he also acknowledges the reality of fluctuating weight. He weighs himself every day, citing that it helps keep him grounded, although he remains unfazed by minor deviations from his target weight. His approach encourages a balanced mindset, emphasizing the importance of resilience and self-forgiveness in the pursuit of health.

In reflecting on his experiences, Roker candidly expressed that perfection in health and weight maintenance is unattainable. “No one’s perfect—you’re going to screw up,” he stated, recognizing that setbacks are a natural part of any journey. Instead of dwelling on past mistakes, he advocates for self-compassion and a focus on current efforts. His philosophy underscores the reality of human imperfections and the necessity of a forward-looking mindset when tackling health goals.

Ultimately, Al Roker’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the continuous effort required to maintain health and well-being. His experiences not only resonate with those who battle similar issues but also act as a reminder of the importance of self-care and perseverance. As he moves forward in his career and personal life, Roker demonstrates that challenges can serve as powerful catalysts for growth and transformation, inspiring others to prioritize their health while accepting the journey’s ups and downs.
