In the early 2000s, the WNBA was thriving in cities like San Antonio, Texas, with teams like the Houston Comets, Dallas Wings, and San Antonio Stars serving as powerful examples of athleticism and teamwork. However, within 15 years, the Comets folded, and the Stars relocated to Las Vegas, leaving a void for basketball fans. Years later, the author found themselves in New York City attending a New York Liberty game, reigniting their passion for the WNBA and the community it represents.

Attending a New York Liberty game at Barclays Center, the author was struck by the number of queer basketball fans in attendance and the sense of hope and community that filled the arena. This experience inspired the author to attend all 40 regular season New York Liberty games as a way to visit all 12 WNBA stadiums and witness the power of collective dreaming. In a time where hope can feel scarce, the author saw the importance of showing up consistently and being a fan, embracing the opportunity to witness history in the making.

As a fan of the WNBA, the author became interested in documenting the diverse community of fans that make up the league’s fandom. By speaking with fans from New York to LA, the author collected stories and images that capture the unique and passionate spirit of women’s basketball supporters. This project inspired the author to create a photo book that celebrates the people and fashion that define the WNBA fan experience, showcasing the diversity and creativity of fans across the nation.
