Authorities Say 9-Year-Old Canadian Girl, Whose Father Faces Murder Charges, Was Drowned

A preliminary autopsy has determined that 9-year-old Melina Galanis Frattolin’s cause of death was drowning, ruling it a homicide, according to New York State Police. The autopsy, conducted by Dr. Michael Sikirica at Glens Falls Hospital, noted asphyxia due to drowning as the cause, with final lab results still pending. This tragic incident has led to significant legal repercussions, as Melina’s father, 45-year-old Luciano Frattolin, faces serious charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse. This alarming case raises questions about the circumstances leading to her death and the actions of her father.

Luciano Frattolin remains in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility following his arraignment. Initial reports indicate that Melina and her father entered the United States from Canada on July 11 for what was reportedly a vacation. Surveillance footage captured them in Saratoga Springs on July 19, with Melina speaking to her mother shortly after. However, Frattolin called 911 later that night, claiming his daughter had been abducted, setting off a frantic search that ultimately led to the discovery of Melina’s body in a shallow pond in Ticonderoga less than 16 hours later.

Despite Frattolin’s claims of abduction, investigators found no evidence supporting his story. Authorities from several law enforcement agencies, including the New York State Police, Canadian police, and the FBI, have joined efforts to investigate the case. The details surrounding Melina’s final hours remain shrouded in confusion, leaving many questions unanswered. The lack of corroborating evidence to support Frattolin’s narrative raises skepticism about the truth behind the events that occurred.

In light of the ongoing investigation, New York State Police are actively seeking information from the public. They have encouraged anyone who may have pertinent details related to the case—specifically footage involving the 2024 gray Toyota Prius that Frattolin and Melina traveled in between July 11 and July 19—to come forward. Authorities are particularly interested in information from areas along I-87 Northway, specifically exits 28 to 20, during the evening of July 19. This outreach aims to gather additional evidence that could clarify the timeline and circumstances of Melina’s death.

As the investigation progresses, both the Essex County District Attorney’s Office and Frattolin’s Public Defender have declined to comment, leaving the public and media with a desire for more information. The case has garnered significant attention, coming to symbolize the tragic loss of a young life under mysterious and troubling circumstances. This incident not only raises alarm in the local community but also highlights broader concerns surrounding child safety and the potential for domestic violence.

As this tragedy unfolds, the fate of Luciano Frattolin will become clearer through the legal process, while the somber reality remains that a young girl’s life was cut short. The public’s engagement and information, combined with ongoing investigations, could shed light on what transpired. This case reminds everyone of the vulnerabilities that children face and the urgent need for vigilance in protecting them from harm.
