SAINTS Rescue, located in Mission, B.C., is an organization dedicated to providing homes for senior and special needs animals. With over 100 residents ranging from dogs and cats to pigs, cows, and goats, the sanctuary focuses on those with significant medical challenges. Among them is a remarkable 24-year-old blind horse named Annabelle. Due to her painful eye condition called uveitis, her previous owners sought a sanctuary for her, recognizing it would be unfair to keep her in a standard boarding situation. Annabelle has adapted well to her environment; according to Ali Schumann, the barn supervisor, she can navigate the sanctuary expertly, illustrating her resilience and ability to thrive despite her blindness.

For almost two decades, SAINTS has operated from a small, converted house; however, the organization is now preparing for an exciting transition. They have acquired a larger property in Maple Ridge, aiming to improve both their facilities and the quality of life for the animals. Schumann noted the need for better medical facilities and additional space, which would significantly enhance their ability to care for the diverse range of animals they shelter. The move is essential for creating a more accommodating environment that meets the evolving needs of the animals.

The non-profit is supported solely by donations and has kicked off a fundraising campaign to facilitate the relocation and the construction needed at the new site. So far, they have successfully raised $830,000, but they require over $1 million to complete their ambitious plans. The organization recognizes that this transition is not a decision to be rushed; they need to thoughtfully manage the move to ensure the animals experience minimal disruption.

Transitioning the animals is a complex process that involves careful planning. Schumann emphasized the importance of maintaining the animals’ social structures and routines. For Annabelle and other animals, the process will incorporate various sensory items to aid in their adaptation to the new environment. This attention to detail reflects the organization’s commitment to the well-being of its residents during this potentially stressful period.

Nathan Wagstaffe, the sanctuary manager, reinforced the significance of SAINTS’ mission in the community. The organization provides vital support and care for animals that are often deemed unadoptable due to severe medical issues or behavioral challenges. Wagstaffe highlighted that their role is specialized, emphasizing the profound impact they have by offering homes to animals when few others will.

In conclusion, SAINTS Rescue is at a pivotal moment in its history as it embarks on a journey to a new and improved facility. The dedication of the staff and their commitment to the care of animals like Annabelle represent a profound compassion for those that society often overlooks. With continued public support and outreach, the organization aims to ensure a brighter future for senior and special needs animals, allowing them to live their lives with dignity and love.
