Bath & Body Works Candle Bursts in Former NYC Official’s Face, Causing ‘Severe’ Pain: Lawsuit Claims

Renita Francois, a former City Hall official, is suing Bath & Body Works after a candle explosion left her with severe injuries. On January 19, 2023, while at her Valley Stream, Long Island home, she lit a three-wick “Sweater Weather” candle, which erupted as she leaned in to smell it. The explosion sent molten wax flying into her face and arms, causing significant injuries. In her lawsuit, Francois describes the incident as a life-altering event that has left her with second-degree burns, permanent scars, and an emotional toll that has shattered her confidence.

The injuries she sustained from the blast were horrific. The heat from the explosion singed off her eyebrows and melted her eyelashes, leaving her with a painful reminder of the accident. The couple’s legal papers detail how her husband, McEvans, witnessed the horrifying event, describing the moment when flames consumed his wife’s face. Following the explosion, Francois was rushed to an emergency room, where medical professionals treated her severe burns. The aftermath of the incident has been psychologically distressing, turning her daily life into an ongoing struggle with her self-image and emotional well-being.

Francois claims that the candle was inherently dangerous due to its composition. She alleges that the product was made with substandard materials and failed to undergo adequate safety testing, creating an unreasonable risk of explosion. Specifically, she points to chemical additives in the wax as contributing to its highly flammable nature. Her lawsuit argues that the manufacturer, Premier Candle Corp., was aware of the hazards associated with their products, referencing a recall issued in 2016 for candles that posed risks of explosion and fire. This prior knowledge, she contends, underscores the negligence in producing such a dangerous item.

In her previous career as executive director for the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety, Francois was confident and assertive while addressing public audiences. However, since her injuries, her fear of public speaking has grown. The scars she bears serve as a constant reminder of the explosion, impacting her self-perception and ability to engage in her professional life. Before the incident, she enjoyed commanding an audience; post-explosion, she feels that her appearance speaks volumes, overshadowing her words and professional identity.

Francois is seeking unspecified damages in her lawsuit, framing her pursuit of justice as more than just personal recompense. She emphasizes the importance of holding corporations accountable for their actions, particularly those that prioritize profit over consumer safety. She believes her legal action seeks to compel companies like Bath & Body Works and Premier Candle Corp. to take their responsibility seriously and implement necessary safety measures to prevent future incidents. This not only serves her interests but also aims to protect other consumers from potential harm.

As the case unfolds, both Bath & Body Works and Premier Candle Corp. have yet to respond formally, as no immediate statements from the companies have been made. Francois’s determination to seek accountability reflects a broader concern for consumer safety, especially in a market where many assume the products they purchase are safe for use in their homes. Her story has garnered attention, not only for its shocking details but for the implications it has on consumer rights and corporate responsibility in the product safety landscape.
