Former UFC fighter Ben Askren recently announced his release from the hospital after undergoing a double-lung transplant due to severe pneumonia. In a heartfelt video update recorded from his vehicle, with his wife Amy driving, the 40-year-old shared his grueling journey of recovery that lasted for 59 days in the hospital. During this time, he experienced significant weight loss, dropping 50 pounds, and faced life-threatening moments, admitting he came perilously close to death several times. Despite these challenges, Askren expressed gratitude for the support he received from friends, family, and fans throughout his ordeal.

Describing the experience as surreal and “like a movie,” Askren noted that he couldn’t recall much of his stay at the hospital from late May to early July, a period during which he experienced severe complications, including his heart stopping temporarily. His wife confirmed that he had indeed faced critical moments, underscoring the severity of his condition. Askren’s narrative is one of resilience, emphasizing the importance of support and human connection during times of hardship. He acknowledged the outpouring of love and assistance that helped him and his family manage this challenging period.

Askren’s recovery journey also includes relearning basic physical skills, such as walking, due to the extensive medical intervention he underwent. He humorously noted he had to “reteach” himself how to walk, highlighting the significant impact of his health crisis on his physical capabilities. Despite the ongoing struggles with his rehabilitation, Askren is optimistic and determined to regain his strength and health in the coming months, sharing that he is already making strides in his recovery.

In a previous communication from the hospital, Askren had requested prayers for a suitable donor for the transplant, which ultimately followed after a lengthy wait. His wife had been a strong pillar of support during this time, and her presence at his side continues to be a source of motivation as he navigates the road to recovery. Askren’s determination to return to a normal lifestyle reflects his competitive spirit, cultivated over years as an athlete in wrestling, mixed martial arts (MMA), and professional boxing.

Throughout his career, Askren has achieved notable accolades, including being a two-time NCAA champion and representing Team USA in the 2008 Olympics. His transition into mixed martial arts began in 2010, where he showcased his grappling skills in various prestigious organizations, including Bellator and the UFC. His notable fights over the years included memorable bouts against popular figures like Robbie Lawler and Jorge Masvidal. His recent foray into boxing, wherein he faced Jake Paul, ended with a first-round knockout, marking a significant moment in his boxing career.

In addition to his health recovery, Askren recently signed with Real American Freestyle, aiming to popularize professional freestyle wrestling. This new venture signifies his commitment to remain active within the wrestling community while he continues to work on his rehabilitation. Overall, Askren’s resilience and fighting spirit, both inside and outside the ring, serve as a testament to his character and his dedication to overcoming adversity. His journey not only inspires fans but also emphasizes the power of community support in times of personal crisis.
