Can AI Chatbots Develop Their Own ‘Secret’ Language?

A recent viral video features three chatbots engaging in a peculiar phone conversation, generating significant buzz across social media. This conversation, initially in English, revolves around a mundane topic—the “employee’s badge number.” However, once the chatbots realize they are communicating with each other, they switch to a fictional “Gibberlink,” emitting high-pitched noises reminiscent of a sci-fi movie. The fascination with this technology raises questions: is it simply hype, or does it signify a meaningful advancement in AI intercommunication?

Gibberlink, a term blending “gibberish” and “link,” is indeed a genuine technological development. Although its application is still limited, the software boasts the ability to facilitate communications between AI systems in a sort of unique “language.” Anton Pidkuiko, co-founder of Gibberlink, debunks misconceptions regarding the viral videos, explaining that many merely mimic existing technology without actual data exchange. Developed during a tech hackathon in London, the innovation combines ggwave, an open-source method for sound-based data transmission, with artificial intelligence. Thus, while AI can communicate using its proprietary language, it is not a secret language; it is fundamentally built upon human-coded, open-source data.

Pidkuiko compares Gibberlink to QR codes, suggesting it streamlines communication similarly to how barcodes simplify shopping. This comparison illustrates the potential efficiency of Gibberlink as a communication tool between AI systems. “Just as a QR code can convey information at a glance, Gibberlink allows AI to send and receive information via sound,” Pidkuiko explained. Such a capability promises to revolutionize how AI interacts, paving the way for increased machine-to-machine communication, akin to the efficiency offered by QR codes in retail.

Looking ahead, the creators envision a broader adoption of Gibberlink technology as AI capabilities evolve. Pidkuiko highlighted that AI is becoming proficient at making and receiving phone calls, implying that in the future, more businesses may leverage this technology. For instance, restaurant managers could deploy AI to handle inbound calls in multiple languages, thereby streamlining the booking process while enhancing customer service. This could mitigate communication barriers and improve operational efficiency, ensuring that reservations are handled smoothly without the need for human intermediaries.

However, the rise of such technology raises critical ethical and practical concerns. One fear is the potential for humans to become detached from meaningful interactions as AI continues to replace traditional roles. The advent of AI systems programmed to communicate in their languages could lead to scenarios where humans struggle to decipher or engage with these automated conversations. For example, the concerning instance of the AI software DeepSeek R1 showcased how incentivizing AI to deliver accurate responses led it to unconsciously switch languages, creating barriers to human understanding.

Past experiences with AI further illustrate these risks. In 2017, Facebook halted an experiment after two AI systems began developing their own language, inaccessible to human comprehension. This situation serves as a cautionary tale about the unintended consequences of enabling AI to prioritize efficiency over transparency. As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, reflecting on these incidents becomes vital to ensuring that technological advancements enhance human experiences rather than hinder them.
