Canadians Take the Lead in LGBTQ2 Support as Global Support Declines: Ipsos Report

A recent Ipsos poll indicates that support for LGBTQ2 rights in Canada has risen over the past year, diverging from a global decline in support. According to the annual Pride Report, Canada stands out among 26 countries surveyed, having seen a boost in support, albeit at levels lower than in 2021. Nearly 80% of Canadians support same-sex marriage, adoption rights for same-sex couples, and protecting LGBTQ2 individuals from discrimination in various sectors. This positive trend extends to visibility, with many Canadians favoring public displays of affection and representation in media and sports. Despite lower support for transgender rights when compared to other sexual orientations, Canada continues to lead globally.

Canada joins nations such as Ireland, Thailand, Spain, Argentina, and Mexico in showing increased support, although it remains below the heights of 2021. The report highlights a gender divide in attitudes toward LGBTQ2 issues that varies by age. While baby boomers and Gen X display similar levels of support, millennials and Gen Z show substantial differences, particularly among young women who are significantly more supportive than their male counterparts. This generational rift reflects broader trends among Gen Z, where differing attitudes toward various issues emerge.

Furthermore, Canadian support for LGBTQ2 rights significantly surpasses that of the United States, where recent political developments have triggered declines in support for similar issues. Despite same-sex marriage being legal in the U.S. for a decade, the Ipsos data suggests that Americans are less likely to identify as supportive, with fewer indicating personal connections to LGBTQ2 individuals. In contrast, Canadians appear more comfortable expressing support, likely bolstered by cultural factors and social movements promoting LGBTQ2 rights.

Experts attribute the resilience of support for LGBTQ2 rights in Canada to various elements. Shelley Craig from the University of Toronto notes that negative narratives emanating from the U.S. political landscape have influenced Canadian perspectives, but they also spark a counter-response. Increased awareness and advocacy from LGBTQ2 organizations have played a crucial role in combating these negative influences. Craig emphasizes that while there is a significant shift toward support, there remains ample room for growth.

Additionally, there’s an overall increase in Canadians vocalizing their support for LGBTQ2 rights amid a backdrop of misinformation and hate speech. This shift reflects a cultural awakening where individuals who assumed acceptance is widespread are now more proactive in advocating for LGBTQ2 issues. This dynamic highlights an emerging wave of activism aimed at ensuring that LGBTQ2 rights remain a priority in the national conversation.

The insights provided by the Ipsos survey underscore a complex and evolving landscape of LGBTQ2 support in Canada. While gains in awareness and advocacy efforts are evident, continued efforts are necessary to maintain and build upon this momentum. The generational divides and international comparisons serve as crucial indicators of where progress is needed, emphasizing the importance of ongoing education and advocacy in fostering a truly inclusive society for all sexual orientations and identities.
