On a recent Friday night, a man rang the bell of a synagogue twice before leaving a lit petrol bomb at its entrance and walking away. The attack was quickly discovered by a 13-year-old boy when smoke began seeping through the door. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control by local firefighters with minimal damage inflicted due to the synagogue’s reinforced steel door and blast-proof security measures implemented four years prior. This incident has left the community reeling, highlighting the emotional wounds that accompany threats to safety and freedom for worship.

The City Shul holds significant cultural and historical value for Melbourne’s Jewish community, being the site of important life events for notable figures like General John Monash and businessman Victor Smorgon. Nestled amid prominent landmarks, it symbolizes not just Jewish heritage but also the civic harmony that has existed in the area for generations. The juxtapition of this sanctuary amid a fortified setting is a cause for concern, as it raises questions about the necessity of stringent security measures to ensure safety during communal worship. Rabbi Gutnick expressed his hope that the synagogue would remain a welcoming place rather than an isolated fortress.

In the aftermath of the attack, community leaders emphasized that this incident transcends the Jewish community, representing an assault on the values of tolerance and coexistence in Australia. Daniel Aghion, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, stressed the broader implications of such hate-driven attacks, calling attention to the need for communal resilience and increased vigilance against manifestations of antisemitism. Rabbi Gutnick encouraged congregants not to succumb to despair but to cultivate light and positivity as a response to violence.

In a display of solidarity and defiance, more members attended the synagogue service following the firebombing, celebrating life and communal bonds rather than succumbing to fear. Community leaders, including Liberal MP David Southwick, expressed their outrage over the brazen attack, insisting on decisive action against the perpetrator. The resilience of the community shone through as children played and congregants enjoyed meals, illustrating their determination to support one another despite the violence.

Messages of support flowed from political leaders, with Premier Jacinta Allan condemning the act as cowardly and antisemitic. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reinforced the urgency of bringing the responsible parties to justice. The attacks on places of worship were condemned as acts of hate that go against the core values of multiculturalism. Aghion pointed out that this was the tenth firebombing incident against Jews in Australia within the past year, reflecting an alarming trend that necessitates attention from law enforcement and political leadership.

The City Shul has a storied history dating back to 1857 and has previously escaped direct acts of violence. However, recent events signal a troubling reality for the Jewish community, facing increased hostility amidst debates over international issues. Local officials, including Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece, acknowledged a troubling connection between anti-Israel protests and rising antisemitism. The relentless pattern of violence against Jews in Australia calls for concerted efforts from the authorities to address and combat these hate-driven actions, as the community grapples with the consequences of unresolved grievances and unchecked rhetoric.
