CNN has invited both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris to participate in town hall events with voters as an alternative to presidential debates. Harris immediately accepted the invitation, while Trump has been resistant to the idea of participating in additional debates. The town halls will take place before a live audience of persuadable and undecided voters from Pennsylvania. CNN believes that the American people would benefit from hearing more from both major candidates for President of the United States.

Despite the previous proposal for a debate between Harris and Trump in Atlanta, Trump showed little interest in participating, leading CNN to extend an invitation for separate town hall events. Fox News also reached out to both campaigns to offer to host a debate in Pennsylvania on alternate dates. However, Trump decisively ruled out any further debates in a post on Truth Social, stating that there will be no rematch between himself and Harris. He believes he won the last two debates and claims it is too late for a rematch with Harris.

Once the CNN deadline passed, the network announced that they were moving on and seeking to hold town halls with both candidates instead. Univision, the leading Spanish-language network, is also broadcasting its own town hall events with Harris and Trump on separate dates. The CNN town hall events aim to provide a platform for the candidates to share their visions for the country with voters. Harris’s campaign has been actively seeking opportunities for debates or town hall events with Trump, but his refusal to participate has led to alternative formats such as the upcoming town halls.

The town hall events hosted by CNN will allow both Vice President Harris and former President Trump to engage directly with voters and address their concerns. This format provides an opportunity for the candidates to present their policies and ideas for the future of the country. The presence of a live audience of persuadable and undecided voters adds a dynamic element to the town hall events, allowing for real-time feedback from voters. The decision to move forward with town halls rather than debates reflects the candidates’ differing approaches to engaging with the electorate.

While Trump has been vocal about his reluctance to participate in additional debates, Harris has eagerly accepted the invitation to participate in the town hall event. The campaigns have been in communication with various networks to explore alternative formats for engaging with voters. The decision to host town hall events with both candidates reflects a shift in the traditional debate format and offers a new way for voters to hear directly from the presidential candidates. The upcoming town hall events with CNN and Univision will provide a platform for Harris and Trump to engage with voters in a live setting.
