Colombia’s first leftist president, Gustavo Petro, is facing an investigation into his 2022 campaign finances. The National Electoral Council voted to launch the investigation, focusing on alleged violations of campaign finance limits by Petro and his campaign manager, Ricardo Roa. Petro quickly dismissed the investigation as an attempt to unseat him, calling it a coup. The outcome could result in fines, but the impeachment of Petro remains unlikely, as the accusation committee of the lower house of Congress, where presidents must be tried, is controlled by Petro’s coalition.

The investigation into Petro’s campaign finances stems from allegations that the campaign exceeded financial limits by about $1.2 million and received funds from prohibited sources, including labour organizations. Suspicions surrounding the campaign were heightened when Petro’s eldest son, Nicolas Petro, was arrested and admitted to receiving money from a drug trafficker for his father’s campaign events. However, Nicolas Petro claimed that his father was unaware of the source of the funds. Petro has denied these accusations, but the council listed 12 financial transactions that were not disclosed by the campaign.

Despite the growing scandals surrounding Petro and his government, no Colombian president has been removed from office by Congress in at least 30 years. The investigation into Petro’s campaign finances will be heard by the accusation committee, where his coalition holds a majority. Petro, who has struggled to implement the social reforms he promised during his campaign, has also been embroiled in a bribery scheme related to the purchase of water tankers. Former members of his government agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the investigation.

The allegations against Petro and his campaign manager come at a time when Colombia is facing political turmoil and widespread social unrest. The investigation is seen as a test of the country’s democratic institutions, particularly as Petro is the first leftist president in Colombian history. Petro’s supporters argue that the investigation is politically motivated and an attempt to undermine his presidency. However, critics point to the allegations of campaign finance violations and the involvement of Petro’s son in receiving illegal funds as reasons for the investigation.

The investigation into Gustavo Petro’s campaign finances has the potential to impact his presidency and the political landscape in Colombia. While the impeachment of Petro seems unlikely, the outcome of the investigation could have implications for his ability to govern and implement his policy agenda. As the first leftist leader in Colombia, Petro’s presidency has been met with both support and opposition, and the investigation will likely only further polarize the country’s political environment. It remains to be seen how Petro and his coalition will navigate the investigation and its consequences, as the country grapples with ongoing challenges and social unrest.
