Colorado Man Receives Life Sentence for DUI Crash that Claimed Air Force Veteran’s Life and Injured His Children

In a tragic incident in Colorado, a man named Paul Stephenson, aged 57, was sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 92 years after being convicted of first-degree murder. This conviction stemmed from a fatal crash in which he killed USAF Lt. Col. Matt Anderson and injured his four children while driving drunk. The incident occurred in August 2024 when Anderson was at a 7-Eleven gas station with his family following a visit to the Douglas County Fair. While Anderson’s wife was entering the store, Stephenson drove his Chevy Silverado into their vehicle, resulting in catastrophic consequences.

Stephenson’s history of alcohol-related offenses played a significant role in his sentencing. He acknowledged consuming a bottle of Fireball whiskey and two beers prior to the crash, with his blood alcohol level measuring 2.5 times the legal limit at the time of the accident. This incident marked his third DUI conviction, a factor that greatly influenced the severity of the charges brought against him. District Attorney George Brauchler, who prosecuted the case, emphasized that the decision to pursue first-degree murder charges against Stephenson was aimed at sending a strong message to deter future drunk driving incidents in Douglas County.

The timing of the verdict was particularly poignant, as it fell just before Independence Day. Brauchler commented on the irony of celebrating national freedom while mourning the loss of a patriot like Anderson, highlighting the senselessness of the tragedy caused by drunk driving. He expressed the belief that a strict sentence would serve as a deterrent for others who may consider driving under the influence, reinforcing the notion that such reckless behavior has dire consequences for innocent lives.

Anderson’s family expressed a sense of closure with the verdict, grateful for the efforts of the justice system that led to it. His father voiced appreciation for the agencies involved, emphasizing that the verdict offered a small measure of solace amidst their profound grief. The case has underscored the community’s stance against drunk driving, with Douglas County being recognized as particularly aggressive in addressing such offenses compared to other jurisdictions.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Nate Marsh also praised the jury’s decision, underscoring the seriousness of driving under the influence and the lack of regard Stephenson showed for human life. The conviction was framed as reflective of the extreme indifference exhibited by Stephenson during the incident. Marsh emphasized the finality of the sentence, ensuring that Stephenson would not have the opportunity to inflict further harm on others, thereby protecting the community from potential future tragedies.

This case represents a broader societal challenge with respect to drunk driving and its repercussions. As communities grapple with the impacts of such reckless behavior, the verdict serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences that can arise from making irresponsible choices. The ongoing discourse surrounding DUI laws and enforcement continues to evolve, with the ultimate goal of fostering safer roadways for everyone and preventing further tragedies like the one that led to the loss of Lt. Col. Matt Anderson.
