A group of people gathered outside Columbia University to protest against the college’s agreement to implement policy changes following demands from the Trump administration. The protesters were chanting, banging drums, and holding signs that read “defend democracy” and “defend teaching.” They expressed their grievances with the school, including the arrest of prominent anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil by federal immigration authorities. The group accused the Trump administration of attacking Columbia to coerce other universities to comply with their authoritarian regime.

Federal officials had pulled $400 million in research grants and other funding from Columbia University due to their handling of protests against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. In order to consider restoring these funds, officials demanded nine separate changes to the university’s academic and security policies. U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that Columbia is “on the right track” towards recovering federal funding after agreeing to implement policy changes. These changes included putting the Middle East studies department under new supervision, overhauling protest rules, adopting a new definition of antisemitism, and expanding intellectual diversity at the university.

The protesters also took to social media to urge students and faculty members not to attend school or work to protest the policy changes. They criticized the university for yielding to the demands of the Trump administration and accused them of compromising academic freedom and democracy. The group highlighted the importance of standing up against authoritarian regimes and defending the rights of students and faculty members. The removal of $400 million in federal funding sparked outrage among activists and supporters who viewed it as an attack on the university’s autonomy and independence.
