Algerian boxer Imane Khelif intends to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles despite facing controversy and backlash during the Paris Olympics. Khelif won a gold medal in women’s boxing in Paris, despite being previously disqualified from the International Boxing Association World Championships in 2023 for gender eligibility issues. The controversy stemmed from DNA tests that revealed XY chromosomes in some athletes who were trying to pose as women, leading to their disqualification. While Khelif was disqualified for “medical reasons” related to high testosterone levels, the boxer has not been proven to be transgender.

Despite facing criticism and backlash from public figures like President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and J.K. Rowling, Khelif was permitted to compete in the Paris Olympics with the full support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Khelif filed a lawsuit in France citing “acts of aggravated cyber harassment” due to the negative response to her participation. The backlash not only affected the boxer but also impacted the health of Khelif’s mother and extended family. Khelif expressed feeling discouraged and mentally affected by the situation but remained strong with the support of specialist doctors during the Paris Olympics.

Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, Khelif is determined to compete again despite potential stricter gender eligibility policies. President Trump has signed an executive order banning trans athletes from women’s and girls’ sports nationwide, and it was suggested that trans athletes would be kept out of the country for the 2028 Olympics. However, Khelif stated that these policies do not apply to the athlete as she identifies as a girl and has lived her entire life as one. Khelif remains resilient in the face of challenges and is set on participating in the upcoming Olympics.

With the departure of IOC President Thomas Bach this year, potential changes in the committee’s gender eligibility policy may be on the horizon. Former Olympic gold medalist Sebastian Coe has emerged as a potential successor to Bach, and in his manifesto for IOC presidency, he emphasizes the importance of protecting female athletes. Coe previously expressed feeling “uncomfortable” about the situation involving Khelif, indicating a potential shift in the committee’s stance on gender eligibility policies. The upcoming 2028 Olympics may see a different approach to handling such controversies.

While Khelif’s participation in the Paris Olympics stirred international outrage and criticism, the boxer remains focused on her goal of competing in the 2028 Olympics. Despite facing mental and emotional challenges, Khelif is determined to overcome setbacks and continue pursuing her athletic dreams. With ongoing debates surrounding gender eligibility in sports, Khelif’s resilience and commitment to participating in future competitions highlight the complexities and controversies surrounding this issue. As the world anticipates the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, Khelif’s story serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by athletes in navigating gender identity and eligibility in sports.
