In a recent video, a coroner has recommended that the length of time prisoners can be held in watchhouses should be reduced from 21 days to just 72 hours. The coroner also suggested that funding for organizations supporting people in custody should be increased. This recommendation comes after concerns were raised about the conditions and treatment of prisoners in watchhouses.

The coroner’s recommendation comes in light of the increasing concerns surrounding the treatment of prisoners in watchhouses. There have been reports of overcrowding, lack of access to basic amenities, and poor sanitation in these facilities. By reducing the length of time prisoners can be held in watchhouses to just 72 hours, the coroner hopes to address some of these issues and improve conditions for those in custody.

It is important to note that the coroner’s recommendation is just that – a recommendation. It will be up to government officials and policymakers to determine whether or not to implement these changes. However, the coroner’s concerns highlight the urgent need for reform in the prison system and the importance of ensuring that the rights and well-being of prisoners are protected.

In addition to reducing the length of time prisoners can be held in watchhouses, the coroner also recommended increasing funding for organizations that support people in custody. This would help to ensure that prisoners have access to necessary resources and support services, such as mental health care, addiction treatment, and reentry programs. By providing more support for individuals in custody, the coroner believes that recidivism rates could be reduced and overall outcomes for prisoners improved.

Overall, the coroner’s recommendations underscore the need for reform in the prison system and the importance of prioritizing the rights and well-being of individuals in custody. By reducing the length of time prisoners can be held in watchhouses and increasing funding for support organizations, the coroner hopes to address some of the issues facing the prison system and improve conditions for those in custody. It will be crucial for policymakers to consider these recommendations and take action to implement much-needed changes in the system.
