Danielle Brooks Shares About Her ‘Challenging’ Past Abortion Experience: ‘It’s An Inevitable Truth’

Danielle Brooks recently opened up about her personal experience with abortion on the “Pregnant Pause” podcast, shedding light on the emotional complexities of her decision. At 35, Brooks candidly shared that the experience was incredibly difficult for her. She explained, “It was not what I wanted, but there was no way around it.” This vulnerability stems from a desire to connect with other women who may be navigating similar situations, as she feels that sharing her story is important for fostering understanding and compassion among those who have faced this challenge.

Brooks recounted that she was prescribed Accutane to manage severe acne while performing in “The Color Purple” on Broadway and filming “Orange Is the New Black.” The medication requires strict adherence to guidelines, including the commitment to avoid pregnancy. Despite signing a form agreeing to terminate any pregnancies that might occur while on the medication, Brooks found herself pregnant after meeting her husband, Dennis Gelin. The news of her pregnancy prompted a wave of emotions, primarily shock and sadness, as she realized that her long-held belief of not wanting children had crumbled. She expressed, “I broke down because I realized I wanted to be a mom.”

The painful process of her abortion was further complicated by feelings of guilt and selfishness. However, Brooks emphasized the critical role that Gelin played in supporting her during this tumultuous time. She noted that his presence and understanding were pivotal in her coping process, reinforcing her belief that he was the right partner for her. This emotional support was particularly significant given her previous uncertainty about motherhood and her desire for a partnership in parenting, which she felt was crucial for navigating the complexities of raising a child.

Prior to meeting Gelin, Brooks had a clear stance against having children and envisioned a life focused solely on her career. She described a turning point in her life after forming a deep bond with Gelin, which shifted her perspective. This newfound relationship allowed her to envision a family she felt she could build together with him. Brooks stressed the importance of a compatible partnership in raising a child, particularly regarding shared values, religious beliefs, and parenting philosophies.

After her experience with abortion, Brooks eventually ceased taking Accutane and became pregnant with her daughter, Freeya, who was born in November 2019. This transition in her life reflects a newfound openness to motherhood and family. Her journey illustrates how personal relationships can profoundly impact life decisions, including the decision to have children. Brooks’s narrative highlights the evolving nature of women’s desires and choices regarding motherhood and underscores the importance of support during challenging times.

Through this sharing, Danielle Brooks aims not only to reveal her story but also to encourage other women facing similar dilemmas to voice their experiences. By addressing her struggles and emotions, she hopes to foster a sense of community and understanding among women. Her journey from the shock of an unplanned pregnancy to the joy of motherhood encapsulates the often complicated relationship women have with their reproductive choices and the support systems they need during such transformative moments in their lives.
